The Cistercian Abbey Abbaye Blanche (White Abbey) was 1147-1791 a monastery of Cistercian nuns in Mortain , Manche department , in France .

history

Saint Vitalis von Savigny , founder of the Savigny Monastery , founded the Abbaye Blanche nunnery (Latin: Abbatia Alba , German: White Monastery , also: Les Blanches , Latin: Albae Dominae ) in Mortain (at that time the diocese of Avranches ) on the banks of the Cance , which became Cistercian in 1147 together with Savigny. Originally an abbey , the monastery was a priory from 1350 to 1649 , then an abbey again. In 1791 the French Revolution led to the dissolution of the monastery and the dismantling of the cloister. The preserved buildings were expanded with new buildings in the 19th century and accommodated a seminary. From 1916 to 1918 the monastery served as a military hospital. The Spiritans were there from 1923 to 1983 (including Marcel Lefebvre from October 1945 to June 1947 ). From 1984 to 2011 the Spiritans rented the place to the Beatitudes Community . The sale sought since 2007 has not yet been realized in 2017. The medieval church (with significant choir stalls), the chapter house, a few remains of the cloister and other buildings have been under monument protection since 1920.
