from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cistercian Abbey clavas was from 1233 to 1765, a French monastery of Cistercian nuns in Riotord , a commune in the Haute-Loire .

history

The women's monastery Clavas (Latin Clavassium or Clavata , from clavis = key, cf. German monastery from Latin claudere = to close) consecrated to Saint Austregisil von Bourges was founded before 1176 in a valley east of Riotord and in 1259 was subordinated to the Cistercian Abbey of Mazan . In 1765 the remaining nuns were incorporated into the La Séauve-Bénite monastery , which was called La Séauve-Clavas until it was dissolved by the French Revolution .

In the hamlet of Clavas, by the La Clavarine stream , the monastery church, rectory and entrance gate have been preserved. In two places you can still see the monastery coat of arms with two crossed keys. The place, which is managed by an association ( Les Clavari et amis ), is a member of the European Charter of Cistercian Abbeys and Places . Among other things, he created a monastery garden. Habitable buildings are maintained by the scout organization Éclaireurs neutres de France .
