Cistercian Abbey of La Séauve-Bénite

The Cistercian Abbey of La Séauve-Bénite (also: Sauve-Benoîte ) was a French monastery of the Cistercian women in La Séauve-sur-Semène , a municipality in the Haute-Loire department , from 1226 to 1792 .

history

Founded in 1226 by Count Guigues IV on the banks of the Semène and settled by Bellecombe Monastery , the monastery was called in Latin Silva Benedicta , "Blessed Forest", which in French (and Occitan) led to numerous name variants: La Selve, La Salva, La Saulve , Lassova, La Seaulve, La Siauve, La Séauve Benite, La Seuve Benoiste, La Serve Benoiste, La Scaune, Sainte Benoîte . In 1765 the abbey took in the remaining nuns of the Clavas monastery and called itself La Séauve-Clavas until it was dissolved by the French Revolution . Until 1925, the surrounding community was called Saint-Didier-la-Séauve . This gave rise to the two municipalities of Saint-Didier-en-Velay and La Séauve-sur-Semène, the current location of the former monastery.

A stately building from the 18th century (on the "Abbey Square", Place de l'Abbaye ), which is now used as a residential and administrative building, has been a listed building since 1993. The “Circuit des dames de la Séauve-Bénite (PR 284)” is named after the monastery. For a long time the nun Marguerite Langlois (* in the 12th century) was venerated as a saint in the vicinity of the monastery. The Sainte-Marguerite street in La Séauve-sur-Semène is still named after her today.
