He was the son of Count Guigues III. from Forez and Alix from Sully. He inherited his father when he died in 1204. During his minority he was under the reign of his uncle Renaud II of Forez , Archbishop of Lyon .

At the instigation of King Philip II. August Guigues was married to Philippa († 1223) in 1205, a daughter of Guido II of Dampierre-Bourbon . His sister was married at the same time to his new brother-in-law Archambault von Dampierre-Bourbon . In his second marriage he married Ermengarde von Auvergne († 1225), daughter of Count Guido II , in third marriage finally in 1226 Mathilde von Courtenay , Countess of Nevers , Auxerre and Tonnerre in her own right, daughter of Peter II of Courtenay , Emperor of Constantinople and Agnes of Nevers .

In 1239 he took part in the crusade of Theobald von Champagne ( crusade of the barons ) to the Holy Land. When Theobald returned to France in September 1240, he initially stayed in the Holy Land, where he joined the party of the Knights Templar and the local barons. Guigues died on the way home in Puglia . He was buried in the cathedral of Montbrison (Notre-Dame de l'Espérance) built by him in 1223 ; the sarcophagus is decorated with a reclining figure of him.

His second and third marriages were childless.
