Archambault VIII. (Bourbon)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Archambault VIII (* 1189 ; † 1242 ) from the family of the lords of Dampierre-sur-l'Aube was lord of Bourbon-l'Archambault .

He was the eldest son of Guy II. De Dampierre and Mahaut I de Bourbon , the heiress of Bourbon.

In 1215 King Philip II of August appointed him royal governor in Auvergne . His father had already held this office after he had subjugated Count Guido II of Auvergne in 1213 . In 1223 Archambault was also appointed a connétable of the Auvergne, with which he was entrusted with the military leadership there. In 1230 he had to give up these offices again after Count William X had got his lands back and the crown land in the Auvergne ( terre royale d'Auvergne ) was entrusted to a royal seneschal for administration.

Archambault VIII married Guigone de Forez for the first time in 1205 , and Béatrice de Montluçon for the second , attested in 1215.

He had four children, two from each marriage:

Archambault VIII should not be confused with Archambault of Bourbon, his maternal grandfather and son of Archambault VII , who died in 1169 and thus a few years before his father, who is attested in 1171, which is why there are some irritations in the census here.
