Cistercian abbey of Le Perray-aux-Nonnains

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cistercian Abbey of Le Perray-aux-Nonnains was 1248-1790 a monastery of Cistercian nuns in Écouflant , department of Maine-et-Loire , in France.

history

The Crusaders Robert de Sable donated before 1200 north Angers at the confluence of Maine and Sarthe in Écouflant (from the Latin: apud conflentum = at the confluence), a Benedictine monastery , which in 1248 settled with Cistercian and Monastery Le Loroux was assumed. The place Le Perray (from Latin perreium or porretum ) was subsequently called Le Perray-aux-Nonnains (nuns-Perray). The monastery was under strong competition from the Ronceray Benedictine Abbey in Angers. A reform-minded group of sisters founded the Sainte-Catherine priory in Angers (Rue Saint-Laud) in 1638 . When the French Revolution closed the Monastery of Le Perray in 1790 , eight sisters were still there. Today there are only a few remains, especially the entrance portal. In Écouflant, the field name Le Perray and the street name Route du Pont aux Filles (Sisters' Bridge) are reminiscent of the former monastery. In Angers, the abbess's city residence ( Hôtel du Perray , from the 16th century) is still on Rue Chevreul .
