The Yerevan Zoo ( Armenian Երևանի կենդանաբանական այգի ) is the zoological garden of the Armenian capital Yerevan . It is located on Mjasnikjan Street (M4) in the city district of Nor Nork on the border with Nork-Marasch in northeast Yerevan. The main partner of the zoo is the Amsterdam Zoo Natura Artis Magistra .
history
Planning for a zoo in Yerevan began in the 1930s, but the decision of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic had to be awaited, so that the zoo could not be opened until 1940. It was opened with an area of three hectares and 20 animals bought at the 12th Zoological Exhibition in Yerevan. The period from 1941 to 1945 was marked by construction activities. The money came from the government in Moscow despite the shortage of money during World War II . In 1945 the zoo was able to present 179 animals from 32 different species, in 1954 there were 354 animals. At that time, the zoo was also greened: 2500 trees were planted. However, since there was no irrigation system, most of these trees died shortly afterwards. The zoo presented the animal world in four sections: an aquarium / terrarium, birds, predators and ungulates, a division that is still valid in the 2010s.
The number of species continued to grow, so that in 1980 the zoo had 350 different species. By the beginning of the 1990s, diversity sank again and only 260 species were counted.
The Armenian foundation and non-governmental organization Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets (FPWC) has been supporting the zoo since 2011 with the planning of a veterinary clinic, the construction of outdoor enclosures for tigers, bears and wolves, and the construction of the first inclusive playground in Armenia for disabled children the zoo grounds, an animal adoption program and, since 2014, training of zoo staff with a view to applying for admission of the zoo to the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA).
In June 2018 there was a tuberculosis epidemic among the animals in the zoo .
