The Zoom 8 is a small, light sailing dinghy for children and teenagers. In addition to recreational purposes, the single-handed sailed boat is primarily used in Scandinavia, Russia, Austria and Estonia to train young sailors for regattas .
Zoom 8 is one of the ISAF recognized international one-design .
Hull, rig, sails
In the early 1990s, the boat was designed by young dinghy sailors and Henrik Segercrantz, who is experienced in boat building, in Finland. The hull and deck are made of a sandwich construction , the top layers made of glass fiber reinforced plastic (GRP). The mast is made of GRP with carbon reinforcements, the boom is made of black anodized aluminum. The boat is cat-rigged , so it only has one sail with a sail area of 4.8 m². Woven Dacron cloth is used as the canvas . The maximum payload of the ready-to-sail boat is 150 kg. It is self-draining and unsinkable .
Regattas and races
56 girls and 64 boys from 9 nations took part in the world championship, which was held from July 30th to August 4th 2007 at Achensee in Tyrol. World champions were Lena Hess (Austria) and Thomas Palme (Austria).
The 2008 World Cup took place in Tønsberg , Norway. Lena Hess and Thomas Palme (both Austria) were able to defend their title.
The 2009 World Cup took place in Träslövsäge , Sweden. The 2010 World Cup took place in Estonia.
The 2015 World Championship took place at Lake Wolfgang . World champion was the Austrian Anna Rupp, the world champion was the German Niclas Lehmann, who started for Austria.
