Richard Hugo Max Zoozmann , pseudonyms Richard Hugo and Hugo Zürner (born March 13, 1863 in Berlin , † February 15, 1934 in Karlsruhe ) was a German author , editor and editor .

Life

He attended the Realgymnasium in Berlin and became a bank clerk. He put together a large library and especially collected prints from the Reformation era. In the library of bibliophiles in Dresden he edited writings by Hans Sachs , Christian Reuters Schelmuffski , Abraham a Santa Claras Etwas für Alle and Ulrich von Hutten's conversation book.

Zoozmann emerged as a poet , epic writer , playwright , translator and editor and also wrote under the pseudonyms Richard Hugo , Hugo Zürner , etc. He translated English and Russian literature into German, by Charles Dickens , Oscar Wilde , Lew Wallace , Walter Scott and James Fenimore Cooper . He also translated the novel Quo Vadis by Henryk Sienkiewicz from Polish, poems by Walther von der Vogelweide from Middle High German and works by Dante from Italian (best known for his translation of the "Divine Comedy").

Today he is mainly known for the collection of quotes he had obtained . The alphabetical sorting of the winged words is not based on the beginning of the quotation, but on their central word, which is regarded as 'decisive'. (Example: The ax in the house saves the carpenter von Schiller is not under “D”, but under “A”.) Zoozmann's treasure trove of quotations was first published in 1910 and was published six times during his lifetime; New editions after his death were edited by other editors.

Richard Zoozmann lived in Bad Herrenalb in the Black Forest for the last few years until his death , where he is buried.
