Zoran Ubavic

Zoran Ubavič (born October 28, 1965 - November 21, 2015 ) was a Slovenian football player . In 1992 he took part in the Slovenian national team's first official international match .

Athletic career

Ubavič played from 1983 in the adult area for NK Olimpija Ljubljana . With the club he rose from the 1st Yugoslav soccer league in 1984 , and in the 1988/89 season he was promoted to the highest Yugoslav division with the team. After Slovenia gained independence in 1991, he played with the club in the newly formed Slovenska Nogometna Liga . There he was the top scorer in the debut season with 29 goals this season , leading his team to the championship title with seven points ahead of NK Maribor . In addition, with five goals in one game, he set a record for the highest Slovenian league, which - three seasons later equalized by Štefan Škaper - has lasted for over two decades. In June 1992 he played in the Slovenian national team's first official international match when they drew 1-1 with Estonia . It was his only international appearance. In the following three seasons he repeated the championship win, in 1993 the team also won the national cup and thus the double with a 2-1 win over NK Celje with goals from Nedeljko Topić and Dejan Djuranović .

In 1995 Ubavič moved to ND Gorica , where he also won the championship title in 1996. Under coach Milan Miklavič , however , he was largely only second choice, so that in 1997 he moved on to the first division promoted NK Slavija Vevče . There he stayed only one season, after the direct relegation he moved to NK Ljubljana . There he ended his professional career in 2001.

In 2005 Ubavič returned to the football field. His former club NK Olimpija Ljubljana had become insolvent and was newly founded under the name NK Bežigrad in the fifth-highest division. The club marched through the league pyramid in the following years and rose when Ubavič finally ended his career in 2008, again under the old name in the second-highest division Druga Slovenska Nogometna Liga .
