Bridge and Zuave
sculpture

The Zouave of the Pont de l'Alma is the sculpture of a Zouave on the Seine bridge Pont de l'Alma in the French capital Paris . The bridge is located in the west of the city, between the 8th and 16th arrondissement .

history

The approximately 5.20 m high and 8 ton heavy sculpture was created by Georges Diebolt . It is one of formerly four sculptures that are on the river pillars of the original, in 1856 by Napoleon III. inaugurated arch bridge and represented the soldiers of the troops who had participated in the Crimean War (1853-1856). The Zuave, leaning on his rifle, is depicted in the typical uniform with a fez , short vest, shoulder wrap and harem pants . Behind him are flags and at his feet are other trophies .

The arch bridge was renewed between 1970 and 1974; the other three sculptures were implemented.

High water mark

The Zouave figure was considered an unofficial high water mark by the population . When the waters of the Seine reached their feet, the bank paths were closed; when it was up to their hips, the river was no longer navigable. When the Seine floods in 1910 , the water reached her neck.

Because of the ongoing subsidence of the bridge, the Zuave could not serve as an official gauge at the Pont de la Tournelle (since 1876 Pont d'Austerlitz ). After it has been moved to the pillar of the new bridge, it is significantly higher than before, so that the water levels can no longer be compared.

Trivia

Serge Reggiani in Le Zouave du Pont de l'Alma , Ray Ventura in Ça vaut mieux que d'attraper la scarlatine and Georges Brassens in Les Ricochets took the Zouaves as a motif for their songs.

Roger Bordier published a novel in 2001 called Le Zouave du pont de l'Alma .
