history

In 1806 a hut was built on Roßbühlstrasse to offer shepherds and forest workers protection. The first guests were entertained there from 1832. In 1841 the name of the hut was changed to "Refuge". In 1847 the hut landlord found four traders who got lost in the snowstorm and was able to save their lives. Over the years, injured or lost people have been rescued at the refuge. Ski tourism began after 1900 and the small mountain inn was transformed into a high-altitude hotel. In 1908 a new building with 19 rooms was built, and in 1912 the house received electricity. In 1980 the house was converted into a youth hostel after the death of the last hotelier. The youth hostel was closed at the end of 2006 due to a sharp drop in the number of overnight stays. It was reopened as a hotel in August 2012.

Surname

The name of the place with less than 100 inhabitants is a reminder of the difficulties that used to be associated with crossing the Black Forest .
