history

From 1866 Catholic services were held in the Evangelical Gertruden Chapel, which were initially attended mainly by Catholic soldiers stationed in Uelzen. The few Catholics in Uelzen then belonged to the parish of St. Marien, founded in 1850 and based in Lüneburg . In 1899 Uelzen got its own Catholic pastor, previously a military pastor or the Lüneburg pastor held the services.

Since the Gertrudenkapelle, which could hold around 140 people, had become too small, a church building site was purchased in 1902. On 17 July 1904, the foundation stone was laid, on 14 May 1905 by canon Konrad Steinmann the benediction . After St. Ludwig in Celle and St. Marien in Lüneburg, it was the third Catholic church in the Lüneburg Heath after the Reformation . In 1904 the rectory was built. On August 1, 1913, the parish of Uelzen was set up; it initially comprised the entire district. In 1944/45 the church was seriously damaged by air raids . After Catholic refugees and expellees had settled in the Uelzen district as a result of the Second World War, independent parishes were established in Bevensen (1959), Bodenteich (1963) and Ebstorf (1987). In 1958, the newly built Maria Rast branch church in Holxen was inaugurated and was used by the parish until 1997. In 1972 a new people's altar was consecrated by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen in the Uelzen church , and in 1974 a new parish hall was built next to the church.

On July 1, 1991, Franciscan Minorites from Poland (Warsaw Province) took over the pastoral care, for which a small monastery with its own house chapel was built next to the church . On November 1, 2006, the churches of St. Joseph in Bad Bevensen, St. Bonifatius in Bad Bodenteich and Mariä Visitation in Ebstorf returned as subsidiary churches to the parish of the Divine Redeemer .

Architecture and equipment

The church, which is around 37 meters above sea level , was built as a neo-Gothic brick building based on plans by Richard Herzig .
