Oldenstadt

The Elbe Lateral Canal lies to the west of Oldenstadt and separates the town from Uelzen. Oldenstadt (formerly Ulissen) belonged to the medieval Bardengau . A Benedictine monastery was founded around 970, the founder was Bruno von Verden, a relative of Hermann Billung . The monastery was converted into a monastery in 1133. Corvey monks lived here . Around that time a settlement developed, but it was abandoned around 1250. A new place was founded by these citizens two kilometers to the west and they took the name Ulissen with them. The monastery and the place were called Oldenstadt. The monastery was dissolved in 1529/1530 and an office for the administration of property was established. In 1884 Oldenstadt became the seat of the district administration.
