Parish Church of St. Mary

Sankt Marien is the Roman Catholic parish church in Lüneburg , a district town in Lower Saxony . The parish belongs to the Deanery Lüneburg of the Diocese of Hildesheim . The church, consecrated to the patronage of the Virgin and Mother of God, conceived without original sin, is located on Friedenstrasse.

history

With the introduction of the Reformation , Lüneburg became Protestant. In 1532 the last Holy Mass for a long time in Lüneburg took place in the St. Michaelis Church . On January 1st, 1850, a Catholic mission station was founded in Lüneburg , and its services were initially held in the prayer room of the "chain penal institution". Before 1850, Catholic services were occasionally held in Lüneburg by the Celle parish. The Catholic parish of Lüneburg was founded as early as the spring of 1850, its initially huge catchment area also included Hamburg-Harburg , Lüchow , Soltau and Uelzen .

In the fall of 1854, construction of a church began on Wallstrasse, and the foundation stone was laid in the summer of 1855. On August 5, 1857, the first service was celebrated in the St. Marien Church, which was newly built in the brick Gothic style; the church consecration was made on Whitsun in 1858 by Bishop Eduard Jakob Wedekin . After St. Ludwig in Celle, St. Marien was the second Catholic church to be built in the Lüneburg Heath after the Reformation .

In the 20th century, the area of the parish was reduced by the establishment of new churches (including 1905 in Uelzen , 1914 in Lüchow and 1915 in Soltau ). After 1945, pastoral care districts and parishes were established in Adendorf , Dahlenburg , Neuhaus (Elbe) , Salzhausen and Winsen (Luhe) , among others .

After the Second World War , the number of Catholics in Lüneburg increased significantly due to the influx of refugees and displaced persons from the eastern regions of the German Reich , so that the church was too small and was demolished in 1968. Today's St. Mary's Church was built as a replacement on Friedenstrasse. In 1958, a former factory site was purchased for this purpose. On April 30, 1961, Pastor Johannes Bendfeld broke the ground , and on November 12 of the same year the foundation stone was laid . As early as Good Friday 1963, all services took place in the new church, and on May 5, 1963, Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen consecrated the church.

Since August 1, 2004, the parish of St. Marien also includes the churches in Kaltenmoor , Adendorf and Amelinghausen .
