history

The ecumenical center was built as one of the first ecumenical community centers in the German-speaking region in the large settlement area of ​​Kaltenmoor, which has been emerging since the mid-1960s. The building, located around 34 meters above sea level , was designed by the Brunswick architect Alois Hafkemeyer (1929–1986), who already built the churches of St. Norbert (Grasleben) , Corpus Christi (Rotenburg (Wümme)) , St. Marien (Braunschweig -Querum) , St. Elisabeth (Salzgitter) and St. Bernward (Braunschweig) and a few years later St. Maximilian Kolbe (Salzgitter) designed. The Ecumenical Center St. Stephanus was realized by the Lüneburg architect Carl-Peter von Mansberg. The foundation stone was laid on May 27, 1973, and it was inaugurated on September 21, 1974. It has its own worship rooms for Evangelical Lutheran and Catholic services, the other rooms are partially used by both denominations .

Catholic Church

The Catholic St. Stephen's Church in the ecumenical center is assigned to the parish " St. Marien " as a branch church . It is the youngest church in the Deanery Lüneburg. In the diocese of Hildesheim , two further ecumenical community centers were established in Klein Berkel in 1977 and in Hanover in 1982 .

From September 1, 1971 to March 15, 1985 Wilfried Meyer (1931–2016) was pastor in Kaltenmoor, while the Ecumenical Center St. Stephanus was built during his work.
