St. Bernward is a Catholic parish church in Braunschweig , its parish of the same name belongs to the Braunschweig deanery of the Hildesheim diocese . The church named after St. Bernward von Hildesheim is located in the district of Heidberg (Stettinstraße 2a).

history

In 1958/59 construction began on the Heidberg district, initially known as the Südstadtsiedlung . On March 1, 1963, the parish of St. Bernward was founded. In the beginning it was based at Bautzenstrasse 25, and its services were held in the Heidberg-Ost school pavilion on Dresdenstrasse. Church services were also held in the neighboring district of Melverode , which also belongs to the parish , in the New School on Görlitzstrasse and in the Protestant St. Nikolai Church. Long-time pastor was Johannes Tannhäuser († 1991).

From 1968 the St. Bernward Church was built, as well as the rectory, rectory and day-care center. The day care center was inaugurated on October 14, 1969, followed by the consecration of the church on November 8, 1970 by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen .

Since November 1, 2006, the churches of the Holy Trinity in Stöckheim , St. Hedwig in Rüningen and St. Heinrich in the Südstadt have also been part of the parish of St. Bernward, their parishes have been abolished. This increased the number of members in the parish from around 2,100 to over 6,400. Before that, these four parishes had already formed the pastoral care unit "Braunschweig-Süd" for a number of years .

Architecture and equipment

The church, located around 82 meters above sea level , was built according to plans by the Brunswick architect Alois Hafkemeyer (1929–1986), which already houses the churches of St. Norbert (Grasleben) , Corpus Christi (Rotenburg (Wümme)) , St. Marien ( Braunschweig-Querum) and St. Elisabeth (Salzgitter) , and later designed the Ecumenical Center St. Stephanus and St. Maximilian Kolbe (Salzgitter) .

The altar is located under the highest point of the church, which is designed as a towerless central building and crowned with a gilded cross . An Eternal Light is located next to the tabernacle , a second Eternal Light is visible from the outside through a small window. The tabernacle, altar, baptismal font and crucifix were designed by Jürgen Weber . Claus Kilian designed the three windows behind the altar. The carved stations of the cross originate from the Aegidienkirche and have been replaced there by a more modern way of the cross. The equipment also includes statues of Saint Mary (mother of Jesus) and Bernward, as well as a digital organ . Next to the church is the St. Bernward day care center run by Caritas .
