history

As the Braunschweig population increased, the Mascheroder Holz settlement was built in the south-east of the city from 1936 . The construction of churches was not included in the planning of the settlement. A community house was built in the center of the settlement, the architecture of which is reminiscent of a church. The few Catholics who lived in the settlement in the early years belonged to the Nicolaikirche , which was destroyed in the bombing raid on Braunschweig on October 15, 1944 . From 1943 on, the Nicolai congregation held a Catholic service in the Protestant village church in nearby Mascherode, and chaplain Bernhard Treuge was appointed pastor for the Catholics in the settlement.

As a result of the Second World War , the number of Catholics also increased in the settlement from May 1945 due to the influx of refugees and displaced persons from the eastern regions of the German Reich . The services continued to take place in the Mascherod village church, also in the Lindenberg school, in the Rautheim barracks and in the community hall of the local evangelical St. Mark's community.

On September 25, 1946, a parish vicarie was established in the Mascherode settlement , belonging to the Nicolai community . In addition to the Mascherode settlement, it also included the Lindenbergsiedlung, Rautheim, the village of Mascherode and Klein Stöckheim . Her first of local clergyman was from Weigelsdorf in Lower Silesia originating Archpriest Alfons Gloger. Services were now also held in the Protestant church in Rautheim and in the hall of an inn in Klein Stöckheim. In 1950 a house on Auenweg was bought, in which parish vicar Gloger, who until then had been renting in Zimmermannweg, got an apartment. At the beginning of 1952 the congregation had grown to over 1500 members, and in 1953 a church building committee was formed. Alfons Gloger died on November 4, 1954. Günter Rathai succeeded him on May 1, 1955, and the St. Heinrich Church was later built during his term of office. The congregation had meanwhile grown to around 2000 members. First, however, a small chapel was set up in a garage on Auenweg, where services and meetings took place. Its inauguration took place on October 2, 1955. On February 29, 1956, the City Council of Braunschweig decided to rename the Mascherode settlement to Braunschweig-Südstadt .

In September 1959 construction of the present rectory began, and on January 31, 1960 the foundation stone of the church followed. On October 1, 1960, the parish (Kuratiegemeinde) of St. Heinrich was set up, its catchment area included the previous parish vicarie. On 19./20. November 1960 took place the consecration of the church by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen . In the same year the parsonage and the parsonage were completed. Until the Braunschweig barracks were closed, St. Heinrich also served as a military church for the Catholic soldiers stationed in Braunschweig, and a military chaplain also had his official residence at St. Heinrich. In 1962 the parish already had over 3,300 Catholics. In 1963 Klein Stöckheim left the St. Heinrich congregation with around 700 Catholics and moved to the newly emerging congregation of the Holy Trinity . In 1971 the sanctuary was redesigned following the decisions of the Second Vatican Council . On January 1, 1982, the parish of St. Heinrich was elevated to a parish.

Around 2004 there was a pastoral care unit with St. Theresia vom Kinde Jesu (Cremlingen) , St. Bonifatius (Weddel) and Heilig Kreuz (Veltheim) . Since November 1st, 2006 the church belongs to the parish of St. Bernward, the parish of St. Heinrich was abolished. At that time there were still about 1,600 Catholics in the parish of St. Heinrich.
