A surcharge is a fee in the rail tariff that the traveler has to pay in addition to the fare .

While the amount of the standard tariff is usually calculated per kilometer traveled , i.e. according to the distance, additional services can be compensated for by a surcharge. This applies in particular to faster trains, trains in night traffic or those with greater comfort.

Germany

In Germany, surcharges for faster trains were common

and for increased comfort in

In addition to speed and comfort, the reason could also be the regulation of demand: In order to discourage local transport customers from using long-distance trains, express and IR trains were only free of surcharges from 51 km on the former Deutsche Bundesbahn.

The surcharge could be charged as a unit price or staggered according to distance and / or the class of carriage. If it was staggered, this was done in very rough steps compared to the basic tariff. For example, in 1990 the DR system applied the following system for express, express and express train surcharges: express trains up to / from 300 km 1.50 / 2.50 DM in the second and 3.00 / 5.00 DM in the first class, express trains up to / from 300 km 3.00 / 5.00 DM in the second and 6.00 / 10.00 DM in the first class as well as express trains up to / from 300 km 5.00 / 8.00 DM in the second and 10.00 / 16.00 DM in first class. In some countries, for example in Spain, there were surcharges for almost every type of long-distance train, depending on the distance and type of train.

Today, it is common practice in long-distance passenger rail transport for Deutsche Bahn (ICE product class and IC / EC product class) to charge flat-rate prices based on the relationship. The surcharge compared to local rail transport (product class C), where a kilometer tariff (or that of the respective association ) still applies, varies depending on the route and travel day. Surcharges do not apply; Local transport tickets are still not valid. Switching to a more expensive tariff is known as a "surcharge".
