The two-colored clematis spanner ( Horisme vitalbata ), also known as the light brown- banded clematis spanner or clematis wave binding spanner , is a butterfly ( moth ) from the spanner family (Geometridae). The specific epithet refers to the common clematis ( Clematis vitalba ), the main food plant of the caterpillars.
features
butterfly
The moths reach a wingspan of 26 to 31 millimeters. Your forewing upper side is divided into three colors. A dark brown band extends from the basal region to the apex between the wide ocher-colored areas adjoining the front and inner edges . The black discoid spot is point-shaped. The upper side of the hind wing is colored brown-gray and shows a small black center and fuzzy dark transverse lines.
Caterpillar
Adult caterpillars are smooth and slender. They are light brown or light gray to bluish gray in color and show a thin, dark back line that is expanded to oval spots on the middle segments. The point warts are black.
Similar species
In addition to its smaller size (wingspan 21 to 25 millimeters), the pasqueflower clematis ( Horisme aquata ) also differs in its lighter overall appearance .
Distribution and occurrence
The species occurs from the Iberian Peninsula across western and central Europe including the British Isles . In the east the distribution extends to the temperate climatic zones of East Asia, from Fennoscandinavia only single finds have been reported. In the south, the area extends from the islands of the western Mediterranean to the Balkan Peninsula and further over the Black Sea region to Kyrgyzstan . The two-colored clematis populates, among other things, forest edges, hedges and vineyards, stony slopes, gardens and settlement areas. In the Alps it rises to heights of 1400 meters.
Way of life
The nocturnal moths like to visit artificial light sources , and sometimes bait . They fly in two generations in the months of April to June and July and August. In the resting position, the wings are stretched or slightly angled, with the hind wings partially hidden behind the forewings. The caterpillars feed primarily on the leaves of the common clematis ( Clematis vitalba ), and also on other species of clematis ( Clematis ). The second generation pupae overwinter.
Danger
The two-colored clematis occurs in Germany in different numbers in the individual federal states and is classified as “not endangered” on the Red List of Endangered Species .
