The two- striped moon spot spanner ( Selenia lunularia ) is a butterfly ( moth ) from the spanner family (Geometridae). The species can sometimes be found in the literature as Selenia lunaria .

features

butterfly

The moths reach a wingspan of 34 to 43 millimeters for the males and 36 to 44 millimeters for the females. The basic color of the wings varies from light yellow to light brown to purple brown. A crescent-shaped glass spot stands out in the discal region bordered by two dark brown transverse lines . A dark central shadow extends from the front edge, but sometimes does not reach the inner edge . There is a large red-brown moon spot on the slightly indented apex region . Another crescent-shaped glass spot stands out on the upper side of the hind wing. The wing edges are irregularly serrated, drawn in clearly concave at the edge of the hind wings. The drawing of the forewings appears in a similar form on the undersides. The antennae of the males are strong double-comb-toothed, those of the females are short double-serrated.

Caterpillar

The caterpillars are colored bark brown. They are provided with bumps and protrusions on the fifth, eighth and ninth segments, which gives them the appearance of a small branch with buds and is an excellent camouflage.

Similar species

The violet-brown moon spot spanner ( Selenia tetralunaria ) differs in some forms by the dark, violet-brown color. Main distinguishing feature is, however, the parallel to the leading edge horizontally extending glass stain on the front wings extending at the two-lane moon Fleckenspanner vertically and parallel to the outer transverse line.

distribution and habitat

The two-lined moon spanner is widespread in Europe up to the Urals , but is absent in northern Fennoscandinavia . In Morocco living subspecies Selenia Lunularia Gamra , in central China Selenia Lunularia kaldjana . The main habitat are dry deciduous forests, bushy heaths and parks. In the Alps , the species rises to around 2100 meters.

Way of life

The moths are mainly nocturnal and fly in two generations, mainly in April and May as well as July and August. Occasional overlaps are possible. They appear at night in artificial light sources . The caterpillars feed on the leaves of various hardwoods, for example linden ( Tilia ), elm ( Ulmus ), oak ( Quercus ), ash ( Fraxinus ), hawthorn ( Crataegus ) and blackthorn ( Prunus spinosa ). The blueberry ( Vaccinium myrtillus ) is one of the food plants . The second generation overwinters in the pupal stage .
