The cylindrical roller neck buck ( Phytoecia cylindrica ) or real roller neck buck is a species of the longhorn beetle family .

description

Cylindrical roller collars are 6 to 14 millimeters long. The chitin armor has a black basic color, which is covered in most places by dense blue-green hairs. Due to the slight unevenness of the exoskeleton, some black points peek out of this hair. Three lighter longitudinal bands can be seen on the thorax . The body of the beetle is narrow and elongated. The name comes from the round shape of the body when you look at it from the front, i.e. it is cylindrical or cylindrical. There is a white border around the eyes. The black, thread-like antennae are roughly body length in the females and longer in the males. They stand almost orthogonally from the body. The front pair of legs is colored red or orange, the other legs are black.

distribution

The beetles are mainly found in southern Europe but can be found all over the Palearctic . They colonize warm, dry areas such as steppes or fallow land, but also the edges of mixed coniferous forests. The beetle population decreases due to the destruction of the habitat.

Way of life

The diurnal animals usually sit on borage , which is their main food. The females curl the stem above the egg, which later dries up. The larvae also feed on borage or umbelliferous plants , where they feed on the lower parts of the stem and in the root neck . After a year the larva pupates. The finished beetle hatches from the pupa and can be found from May to August.
