Poly ( p -phenylene-2,6-benzobisoxazole) ( PPBO , PBO ) is a synthetic polymer .
The synthetic fiber made from it and sold under the brand name Zylon by the manufacturer Toyobo , based in Osaka , Japan, is best known .
Manufacturing
The polymer can be produced from 4,6-diaminoresorcinol dihydrochloride and terephthalic acid dichloride .
Zylon fiber
properties
The material has a high tear strength with a high modulus of elasticity (270 G Pa ). The values of the fibers in these points are each a factor of 2 higher than those of aramid fibers . Zylon only burns when the environment has an artificially increased oxygen content of over 68%. The melting temperature is reached at approx. 650 ° C.
use
The fiber is a component of various products such as protective equipment ( protective vests ), high-voltage cables , motorcycle helmets, cut-resistant gloves, sports equipment and much more.
Since the 2007 season , the FIA has prescribed ten millimeter thick panels made of Zylon as lateral penetration protection in Formula 1 . Since the 2008 season , similar, seven millimeter thick panels have also been required in the IndyCar Series . Before the 2011 Formula 1 World Championship , the safety conditions for cars were tightened again. Zylon now also protects the driver's legs and not just the upper body. The whole thing is achieved by applying Zylon panels to the side of the monocoque .
PBO cables are also used on sailing yachts . There they are used for stages and shrouds , among other things . Advantages over traditional wire rope are lower weight (weight advantage 80 to 90%), a considerably stiffer rig and less wind resistance . The disadvantage is the sensitivity to external influences such as moisture and ultraviolet radiation.
criticism
The fabric has come under fire because the protective performance of a protective vest with Zylon decreases more strongly after a few years, as well as when the fabric becomes damp than with protective equipment made of other materials. For the particularly light protective vests made of Zylon, which are now used by the police in North Rhine-Westphalia , it was therefore decided to replace them with vests made of aramid fibers.
