Buildings

Velthurns Castle

The Velthurns Castle is a historic monument of a special kind. It was created in 1580 as a summer residence for the Bressanone Prince Bishop Johann Thomas Spaur. Paneling, inlay work, carved portals and wooden ceilings, works that are among the most important art carpenters of the Renaissance in southern Germany are considered worth seeing. The gilded coffered ceiling in the Fürstenzimmer with its fine inlay is considered the best work. An aviary was once attached to the castle , which also served as a deer garden. Until the secularization around 1803, the castle was the summer residence of the bishops of Brixen. After that it was imperial property, later passed into private hands and was finally given to the city of Bolzano by Johannes II , Prince von und zu Liechtenstein . On June 18, 1978 it became the property of the Province of South Tyrol. On the ground floor the castle houses a local museum and an archaeological museum.

Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary

Parish Church of the Assumption

Today's parish church goes back to a small Marienkapelle from the 12th century, which stood near the Pflegerbühel. Around 1170 this little church was elevated to a parish church.

Matthias Punter from Vahrn began to enlarge the church around 1499. It was completed ten years later and consecrated in 1515. Due to the steadily growing population, the church slowly became too small and after 400 years (1894) it was enlarged again by Pastor Josef Telser. The new church was consecrated by Bishop Valussi from Trento.

In 1962 the church tower had to be re-roofed and the church itself also needed an overhaul. Warm air heating and a marble floor came about in 1973 under Pastor Herrmann Tasser.

The tower that exists today was built between 1502 and 1570. It consists of massive granite blocks. Seven bells hang in the tower. The largest of these weighs 2500 kg and dates from 1521. In 1958 Pastor Georg Michaeler had the electric bells installed.

The high altar is a neo-Gothic carving, designed by Anton Weber. The organ is a mechanical work from 1898 by the Mauracher company and has 16 registers.

In 1992 the parish church was renewed and restored. Services take place on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. and on Sunday at 10:00 a.m.

St. Lawrence Church

The St. Laurentius Church (Gothic, but with Romanesque nave walls) is in the center of the village. It was built from 1286 to 1295 and expanded around 1400. The tower was only built in the 16th century. Since it was not sufficiently well founded, it shows a clear tendency today.

Other churches

  • St. Anton im Moos
  • St. Georg in Schnauders
  • St. Peter in Schrambach
  • St. Florian in the gorge
  • St. Andreas in Garn
  • St. Sebastian im Lottersack (Unteregarter)

Lost castles

According to historical studies, the first nobles from "Velthurns" should have owned a castle in the area of today's Schrambach, but nothing has survived. However, there is evidence of a castle called "Ziern" on the Pflegerbühel. It belonged to the "Lords of Velthurns" who appeared around 1112.

Archeoparc Feldthurns

Feldthurns is an archaeological site. Therefore, the "Archeoparc" was built in Tanzgasse in the center of the village.

The hikes that begin at the Copper Age cult site lead through all epochs of prehistory and early history, through the Middle and Neolithic, the Metal Ages, the Roman and the Migration Period. Some could be dug up and examined, others are lost forever through carelessness, and much is still underground.

The Copper Age cult site consists of large, often uncut stones, a figurative stone stele and a damaged menhir (the menhir with the images of an ax, a dagger and perhaps an arch, lay in gravel). The traces of the damage allow the conclusion that it was destroyed as early as the Copper Age.

The "Tanzgasse" has been used again and again by people for thousands of years - from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages. The area has not yet been completely excavated.

societies

The church choir of Feldthurns has existed since 1544.

The Feldthurns music band was founded in the 19th century.

The local group of the SKJ (South Tyrol's Catholic Youth) was founded in the 1970s, but has not always been active over the years. In 2006 the local group was reconstituted to actively support the youth in Velturno and to carry out various projects.

There is also a volunteer fire brigade and various sports clubs in Velturno .
