history

Surname

The name Barbian is probably derived from the Latin personal name "Barbius" and the suffix -anu .

Emergence

It is not known when Barbian was founded. Archaeological finds show that people moved through the Barbian area and settled there even before the Romans. Ersturkundlich the locality as is "Parpian" in the years 993 / 94-1005 testified, as in a traditional note of the Bishopric of Freising , the Bavarian Count Otto of the family of Rapotonen Bishop Gottschalk of Freising transferred there possession.

Water dispute between the communities of Barbian and Renon

There was already a dispute over the water in the 1930s, as the municipality of Ritten laid claim to the Pennleger spring , which is located in the municipality of Barbian. The dispute over the source began when the Pennleger source became "public". The Barbian community was then assured that they did not have to worry about the source and did not seek water rights. In 1939 the municipality of Ritten applied for the Pennleger source to be diverted. The Barbians resisted that. Because of the Second World War , this matter remained for a long time. In the post-war period, Barbian submitted the request for water drainage, whereupon the quarrels started all over again. The state water magistrate decided that 60% of the water should go to Ritten and 40% to Barbian. The disputes over the water didn't stop there. Barbian was satisfied with 40% of the water, but Ritten wanted all of the water for himself. Both communities claimed political support on this issue. A decision was made by State Councilor Michl Laimer . Barbian then filed for appeal again and placed the decision in the hands of the South Tyrolean provincial government , which offered a compromise. The Ritten community filed an appeal against it, but the Court of Cassation did not allow it, which ended the water dispute for the time being.
