geography

Stilfs is located in the west of South Tyrol. The main town of the same name in the municipality of Stilfs ( 1300  m ) is located on the orographic left , western side in the lower Suldental , a side valley of the Vinschgau valley drained by the Suldenbach ; the village of Sulden ( 1900  m ) is located in the upper section of the valley. In the middle Suldental near Gomagoi ( 1250  m ) the Trafoital branches off , which offers space for the village of Trafoi ( 1570  m ).

Both valleys are surrounded by the mountains of the Ortler Alps , which are part of the mighty main ridge , the Fallasch ridge and the Lasa mountains . The heavily glaciated main ridge rises south above and between the two valleys. Some of the highest peaks in the Eastern Alps rise up here with a remarkable density . These include the Ortler , at 3905  m the highest peak in South Tyrol, the Königspitze ( 3851  m ), the Zebrù ( 3735  m ) and the Thurwieserspitze ( 3652  m ). The ridge ends above the end of the Trafoital valley on the Stilfser Joch ( 2758  m ), which is accessed by the famous SS 38 panoramic road and provides a transition to Valtellina ( Province of Sondrio , Lombardy ). In the West carrying Fallaschkamm in which the Piz Cotschen ( 3026  m ) represents the highest point, the Italian-Swiss border to Canton Grisons . In the Lasa Mountains east of the Suldental, the Vertainspitze ( 3545  m ) and the Hohe Angelus ( 3521  m ) are the most important summit points.

The entire municipality is protected in the Stilfserjoch National Park .
