Freienfeld ( Italian Campo di Trens ) is an Italian municipality with 2667 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) near Sterzing in the South Tyrolean Wipptal .

geography

The municipality of Freienfeld is located in the Wipptal in the north of South Tyrol , southeast of the nearby city of Sterzing . It extends over an area of 95.29 km² in the valley floor through which the Eisack flows in a north-west-south-east direction and in the surrounding mountains.

Trens, the main town in the parish

The largest villages are at the foot of the valley slopes and alluvial fans: On the orographic left side of the valley there is the capital of the municipality, Trens (930- 1020  m slm , also free field called), and some southeast mouth (900- 960  m ), right in front of trens on the right side of the valley orographic Stilfes (940- 990  m ). There are also in the valley for several other community groups : In the northwest, near the mouth regions of Pfitscher Bach and Ridnauner Bach in the Isarco at Sterzinger Moos, these are Sprechenstein ( 940  m , left the Eisack) and Elzenbaum (940- 980  m , to the right of the eisack), roughly in the center of the municipality Valgenäun (1010 1100  m , left) and Niederried and Pfulters (950- 1000  m , both right). Towards the south-east, the Wipptal narrows increasingly towards the Sachsenklemme and the Franzensfeste community and does not offer any larger settlement any more space.

In the north-east, the municipality extends into the Zillertal Alps . On a slope terrace on the mouth fraction is flans (1270- 1300  m ), on the south-facing slopes of a branching at mouth side valley are the farms of Ritzail (up to about 1500  m ). In the north, a ridge delimits the Wipptal to the Pfitscher Tal (municipality of Pfitsch ), in the east another mountain range to the Valler Tal (municipality of Mühlbach ). At the meeting point of the two ridges, Freienfeld reaches its highest point on the Ebengrubenspitze ( 2990  m ). In the south-west the Wipptal near Freienfeld is framed by the Sarntal Alps . The Tatschspitze ( 2626  m ) in the south of the municipality and the Zinseler ( 2422  m ) on the western border with Ratschings are among the most important peaks here . Between the two mountains the mountain range descends to the Penser Joch ( 2211  m ), a transition into the Sarntal . Finally, the farms found on the southern slopes of a rising from the Wipptal for Penser yoke side valley the fraction Egg (1450- 1580  m ) space.

history

Stilfes and Trens are first mentioned in 827/828 (as "Stilues" and "Torrentes") and Mauls 985/990 (as "Mules"). The communities of Stilfes and Trens were formed in 1820, the community of Mauls in 1838. The community of Freienfeld was established in 1928 by state decree by amalgamating the communities of Stilfes, Mauls and Trens. In 1939 the community had 2,468 inhabitants, 206 of them Italians.

climate

According to Rehder (1965), Freienfeld's climate in the valley areas can be assigned to the Central European montane type. At higher altitudes it changes to the subalpine type and finally, above the tree line, to the alpine type.

temperature

The annual average temperature is 12 ° C. The coldest month is January with average temperatures of around -3 ° C. The warmest month is July with average temperatures around 22 ° C.

Rainfall

In Freienfeld the average annual rainfall is 750 mm. Such an amount of precipitation is quite favorable for agriculture, since the water demand for grassland is given on average, but not at all times. The rainfall is not evenly distributed over the year. The maximum precipitation falls in summer (June, July, August), the least precipitation falls in winter (January and February). In winter, the precipitation falls mostly in the form of snow. In the Eisack Valley near Freienfeld there is a snow cover of at least 1 cm for about 3–4 months.

Climate in the mountains

With increasing sea level, the amount of precipitation increases and because of the lower temperatures the snow stays longer. The most important climatic element that changes with altitude is temperature. While the average temperature on the valley floor is between 7 and 8 ° C, it is only around 2 ° C in the area of the tree line, and only -5 ° C in the area of the highest peaks in the municipality. At this height is the snow line, above which more snow falls than can melt away over the course of the year. Since the municipality of Freienfeld does not extend beyond the snow line, there are no glaciers in it today.

education

In the municipality of Freienfeld there are three primary schools in Mauls, Stilfes and Trens, which together are connected to the German school district of the neighboring municipality of Sterzing III .

traffic

For motor traffic , Freienfeld is primarily opened up by the SS 12 , which crosses the municipality. The A22 , whose entry and exit to Sterzing is on the border to Sterzing , and the Brenner railway run parallel to the state road . The latter offers an access point at Freienfeld train station .
