geography

View over the Villnößtal to the Geisler

The municipality of Villnöß extends over the majority of the Villnöß valley in the Dolomites , includes around half of the Afer valley that runs parallel to it , small parts of the Eisack valley and surrounding mountain areas.

The Villnößtal is a left , eastern side valley of the Eisack valley, which is drained by the Villnößer Bach . Almost the entire valley belongs to the municipality of Villnöß, only the lowest section is administratively divided: While the right side up to the Eisack is part of Villnöß, there the left side belongs to the area of the neighboring municipality of Klausen . The three villages of the municipality are located in the Villnößtal valley: Teis is located on an elevated slope at around 950  m at the transition to the Eisack valley, further into the valley follow the central main town of St. Peter ( 1150  m ) and finally St. Magdalena ( 1250  m ). The northern slopes of the valley offer space for the small hamlets of St. Valentin ( 1150  m ) and St. Jakob ( 1300  m ) west of St. Peter ; The farmsteads of the scattered settlement Coll with a small town center at 1400  m are raised between St. Peter and St. Magdalena .

The Afer Valley, which runs parallel to the north, also flows into the Eisack Valley. It is separated from the Villnößtal by a wooded ridge in which only the Russiskreuz ( 1729  m ) provides a passable passage. In the Afer valley up to the Kofeljoch ( 1866  m ) the community occupies the southern, uninhabited valley flank to the left of the Afer stream . To the east of it, the community area protrudes a little further into the Lüsner valley head as far as Lasanke .

The rear part of the Villnöß valley is surrounded by high mountain ranges of the Geisler group and the Peitlerkofel group , both of which are largely protected in the Puez-Geisler nature park . Particularly famous are the Geisler peaks towering southeast , which dominate the valley view with their two main peaks, the Sass Rigais and the Furchetta (both 3,025  m ). Towards the west, the ridge to the Seceda ( 2518  m ) and the Raschötzer Almen clearly flattens out towards Val Gardena . The mountains above the head of the valley (such as the Zendleser Kofel , 2422  m ) and north of it are included in the Peitlerkofel group. The highest peak here is the Tullen ( 2652  m ) belonging to the Afer Geisler subgroup .

history

General

Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age: Before 5000 BC Little is known about the valley. From 5000 BC Agriculture and cattle breeding spread here as well. From this time flint tips were found among the Geisler. From the Bronze Age and Iron Age, most finds were made in St. Peter and Teis.

Settlement: Funes was of Rhaetians , Romansh and Germans settled. This settlement can also be proven in other Dolomite valleys.

Prehistory of Villnöß: Villnöß belonged to the original parish of Albeins, together with Laion , Gufidaun , Val Gardena and Colfosco . A church was built in the main town of St. Peter in 1029 and the town also had its own pastor . The name Villnöß appeared for the first time in a document in 1058, with different spellings (Valnes, Volnes, Volnez ...). The place name Villnöß probably has its origin in the Ladin villes nöes , which means "new hamlet". Teis was first mentioned in 1157 as Tisis and Teis also had different spellings: Tys, Tays, Thaiss and Theiss. In 1505 Villnöß was separated from Albeins and received its first pastor.

Around 1500 the German language prevailed in the valley and the Villnöss dialect emerged , in which many words can also be derived from Ladin. The names of the fields and courtyards show the historical progress of the German into the valley interior. In the outer Villnöß valley the names are completely Germanised, while in the inner valley the Ladin names remained unchanged due to the later establishment of German.

Establishment of the municipality of Villnöß: In 1810, the municipalities of Villnöß, Gufidaun and Teis were established under Bavarian rule. Austria confirmed this in 1817. Gufidaun and Teis were merged in 1854, but separated again 15 years later. Teis remained an independent municipality until 1929, but was then attached to Villnöß as a fraction.

Ranuihof residence

At the end of the valley is the historic Ranuihof residence . The farm is a former hunting seat. It served the Jenner merchants in Klausen as a hunting lodge from the 17th century . They also brought it into its current form. The Ranuihof residence is at the foot of the Geisler peaks and forms the end of the valley. The noble seat is decorated with numerous wall paintings on which hunting scenes can be seen. The frescoes in the residence were restored in 1983.

Attractions

St. Magdalena in the 1960s ...
... and 2004

One of the sights in Villnöß is the Puez Geisler Nature Park House, built in 2009. Since Villnöß offers optimal access to the Puez-Geisler Nature Park, this valley was chosen as the location. The purpose of the Nature Park House is to inform visitors about the Puez-Geisler Nature Park and to arouse their interest.

The St. Magdalena Church is located in St. Magdalena . There are many legends about the name and origin of the church. According to a legend, after a heavy storm, a small statue of St. Magdalena was washed ashore by the Fopal-Bachl and the church was built on this very spot. That miraculous image is still enthroned in the Church of St. Magdalena today.

Another attraction is the parish church of St. Peter . It is located in the center of the village and can be reached by steep stairs. The church was consecrated to the apostles Peter and Paul in 1801 . Due to its size and its rich baroque furnishings, it is also known as the “Dom im Tale”. The bell tower is 65 meters high and has an onion-shaped dome next to the church.

tourism

Villnöß is part of the Alpine Pearls network , which focuses on environmentally friendly and gentle mobility in tourism.
