Ken Doherty / Achievements
This list features the achievements of snooker player Ken Doherty . The Irish Doherty has been a professional player since 1990 and reached 61 finals in this and in his amateur time, of which he was able to win 33. His greatest success is winning the World Snooker Championship in 1997 , which is also Doherty's only Triple Crown title .
Doherty was in 1969 in the Dublin district of Ranelagh born and is made as a snooker player first attracted attention when he in 1987 and 1989 Irish Snooker Championship and also in 1989, both the IBSF World Snooker Championship and the IBSF Under-21 World Snooker Championship won. After he became a professional player shortly afterwards, in the 1990/91 season , he climbed to the top of the world snooker rankings within a few years . From 1992 he regularly reached the finals of professional tournaments, from his defeat at the Grand Prix in 1992 to his victory at the Welsh Open in 1993 to his defeat in the final of the UK Championship in 1994 . During the next three years, however, Doherty was mostly only able to win smaller, insignificant tournaments - such as the Scottish Masters or the Pontins Professional several times - while he mostly lost the final in the larger tournaments.
In 1997 Doherty finally made it into the final of the World Snooker Championship for the first time , where he met Stephen Hendry , who had been unbeaten in this tournament since 1992. However, Doherty won the final. The world title catapulted him to third place in the world rankings before he reached the World Cup final again the next year and thus almost broke the so-called curse of the crucible ; however, he lost to John Higgins . In the following years Doherty could achieve some more successes; so he reached the final of the Masters in 1999 and 2000 , the UK Championship in 2001 and 2002 and the World Cup final again in 2003 , but lost each time. During the 2006/07 season, Doherty again placed second in the world rankings, but in the following years he gradually deteriorated his form and his world rankings. After he had such a bad world rankings position in 2017 and thus lost his professional status, he received a so-called invitation card from the world association and was thus able to remain active on the tour. In 2013 Doherty was inducted into the Snooker Hall of Fame .
