- April 2 - Pope John Paul II (Karol Wojtyła) dies at the age of 84 after almost 27 years of pontificate . His funeral becomes an international media event.
- December 31st - The CBS Corporation founds the media group Viacom , which emerged from the "old Viacom". The new company, based in New York, is responsible, among other things, for MTV with all regional branches overseas.

- January 16 - The Austrian radio station FM4 celebrates its tenth birthday.
- March 29th - Stefan Weigl is awarded the War Blind Radio Play Prize for the radio play Stripped - A Life in Account Statements produced by WDR .
- October 1st: The operation of hr-klassik was stopped after just seven years for cost reasons. The frequencies of the program were distributed to the other waves of the Hessischer Rundfunk (mainly hr2).
- October 14th - The first BBC proclaimed John Peel Day is celebrated worldwide .

- July 17th - The British music show Top of the Pops switches from BBC One to BBC Two due to dwindling audience interest and is increasingly devoted to the alternative mainstream .
- July 24th - On the 222nd birthday of Simón Bolívar , the international television station Telesur starts . The station, which sees itself as a channel for the integration of Latin America , goes back to an initiative of the President of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez . In addition to Venezuela, Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, Cuba and Nicaragua are involved.
- August 1st - Austrian television celebrates its 50th birthday.
- September 1st - The MTV Adria specialty channel, which belongs to the Viacom Group , begins operations in Ljubljana .
- September 2 - A concert for Hurricane Relief, organized by NBC Universal to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina , is televised nationwide in the United States. Viewers have the option to donate via telephone line.
- September 12th - The private children's channel Nick , renamed Nickelodeon in 2010 , starts broadcasting.
