- May 14th - Foundation of the State of Israel , whereby the League of Nations mandate for Palestine expires after more than 30 years .
- June 21 - Currency reform in Germany: Introduction of the D-Mark in the Trizone .
- June 21 - In New York Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, the company Columbia Records the 33⅓ rpm - LP (LP) to the public. The new sound carrier can store up to 45 minutes of audio information on two pages.

- January 15 - Radio Wien starts broadcasting commercials .
- March 1 - In Austria , the British occupation broadcaster Sendergruppe Alpenland opens a capital city studio on the grounds of Schönbrunn Palace .
- April 3 - From Shreveport , Louisiana , the music show Louisiana Hayride hits the airwaves for the first time. It makes musicians like Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash popular.
- May 14 - With the establishment of the State of Israel , the radio broadcaster Kol Israel ( Voice of Israel ) begins operations.
- October 19 - The evening studio , the most advanced of the German-language night programs , goes on air for the first time on Radio Frankfurt .
- December 26 - In honor of John Reith , the BBC's first general manager from 1922–1938, the BBC Home Service broadcasts the first of its annual Reith Lectures series . In the first issue, Bertrand Russell speaks on the subject of “Authority and the Individual”.

- March 20 - Italian conductor Arturo Toscanini makes his first television appearance on a CBS show.
- June 20 - The later Ed Sullivan Show launches on CBS under the name Toast of the Town . Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis appear on television for the first time in their careers on the show, which is considered lost .
- July 25th - French television (chaîne télévision) broadcasts the arrival of the Tour de France in Paris . Jacques Sallebert is the commentator on this first live broadcast in French television history.
- July 29th - The BBC will broadcast the London Summer Olympics opening ceremony . During the games, the BBC reports for half an hour every day. A temporary television studio will be set up in the Alexandra Palace for this purpose.
