- The German Broadcasting Archive loaded with the two-volume program history of radio in the Weimar Republic the most extensive study on the early years of radio in Germany before.
- January 13 - The Luxembourg media group CLT and the Bertelsmann subsidiary UFA merge to form the largest European television company CLT-UFA.
- May 1st - The amended regional radio law comes into force in Austria , which - almost 75 years after the start of radio broadcasting in Austria - enables a comprehensive private radio landscape.
- May 31 - The Prime Ministers of Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate sign a contract to establish a two-state broadcasting company under the name of Südwestrundfunk .

- The last edition of The Studs Terkel Program will be broadcast on the Chicago station WFMT . The show had been on the program every weekday since 1952.
- May 1st - The German radio station Evosonic , which specializes in electronic dance music, goes on air for the first time.
- May 5th - The foundation stone for the last of the nine ORF state studios is laid in St. Pölten .
- June 20 - The electrical station sunshine live starts broadcasting.
- August 29th - Radio Eins starts broadcasting in Berlin. The new transmitter is created by merging Radio B Zwei and Radio Brandenburg .
- October 3 - The classic channel from NDR, SFB and ORB, Radio 3 , starts operations.

- January 19 - at the 54th Golden Globes in Los Angeles , the TV series The X-Files and Behind the Moon are honored immediately on the left .

- 24./25. June - The First has by Heinrich Breloer designed docudrama Todesspiel premiere. It deals with the events of the " German Autumn " of 1977.
- October 4th - The children's show Tabaluga tivi has its premiere on ZDFtivi .
- October 18 - ProSieben shows the US animated series Freakazoid for the first time ! to see.
- October 24th - Eduard Zimmermann moderates an issue of Aktenzeichen XY ... unsolved for the last time .
- October 27th - The half-hour comedy show and TV parody Switch can be seen in German for the first time on ProSieben .
- November 22nd - Two US comedy series Auf Schlimmer und Eternal and Living Single start on RTL .

- January 1st - Hans-Martin Majewski , German composer, dies at the age of 85 in Bötersen , Lower Saxony. Majewski wrote the theme music for the television series Liebling Kreuzberg .
- 19 January - Manfred Lichtenfeld , German voice actor ( Statler in the Muppet Show ) dies at the age of 71 in Bad Honnef , North Rhine-Westphalia.
- February 19 - Dieter Hasselblatt , German radio play and radio editor dies at the age of 71 in Neuwied , Rhineland-Palatinate.
- April 2 - Carlo Böhm , Austrian actor, dies a few days before his 80th birthday in Vienna. Böhm was best known for the role of the homeless Drballa in the crime parody Kottan .
- May 24 - Edward Mulhare , American actor, dies in Los Angeles at the age of 74 . Mulhare was best known for the role of Devon Miles , the boss of Michael Knight , the main character in the television series Knight Rider .
- May 29th - Herbert Weicker , German voice actor (voice of Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock ) dies at the age of 75 in Munich .
- June 14th - Helmut Fischer , German actor dies in Munich at the age of 70. Fischer became known to a wide audience through numerous television roles, but above all through the role of Franz Münchinger in the television series Monaco Franze .
- June 24 - Brian Keith , American serial actor ( Hardcastle & McCormick ) dies at the age of 75 in Malibu , California.
- June 25 - Jacques Cousteau , French marine researcher and documentary filmmaker, dies shortly after his 87th birthday in Paris .
- July 7th - Heino Jaeger , German satirist, graphic artist and radio personality ( ask Dr. Jaeger , Hessischer Rundfunk ) dies at the age of 59 in Bad Oldesloe , Schleswig-Holstein.
- August 24 - Werner Abrolat , German actor and voice actor ( Gonzo in the Muppet Show , caretaker Willie in The Simpsons ) dies at the age of 73 in Munich.
- September 10th - Walter Ohm , German radio play and theater director dies at the age of 82 in Husum . He was employed as a radio play director at BR in Munich for 34 years .
- November 21 - Erna Raupach-Petersen , German actress, dies at the age of 93 in Flensburg . She was best known for the numerous television broadcasts from the Hamburg Ohnsorg Theater .
- December 15 - Jaromír Borek , Austrian actor dies in Vienna at the age of 69 .
- December 19 - Ibuka Masaru , Japanese engineer and entrepreneur dies at the age of 89 in Nikko . Ibuka founded the Sony group together with Akio Morita in 1946 . In the 1950s and 1960s, Sony constructed the first portable radio and television receivers under his leadership using the then newly developed transistor technology .
