- January 1 - The new name Großdeutscher Rundfunk is introduced for the German Reichsrundfunk .
- September 1st - German troops march into Poland. Beginning of the Second World War .
Radio
- January 16 - The crime series I Love a Mystery premieres on NBC's West Coast channels.
- February 19 - Norman Corwin ’s radio program Words Without Music premieres on CBS Radio Network .
- February 20 - The Liechtensteinische Rundspruch-Aktiengesellschaft is founded.
- March 19 - The legal basis for the introduction of wire radio (cable radio) is laid. In the following years the new technology is offered in Berlin, Düsseldorf and Hamburg.
- April 1 - Deutsche Reichspost takes over the broadcasting systems of the Austrian Radio Verkehrs AG (RAVAG).
- June 21st - Reorganization of the broadcasting system in Ostmark. The transmitters Salzburg and Innsbruck are connected to the Reichsender München , the transmitter Dornbirn to the Reichssender Stuttgart .
- August 7th - Radio Andorra starts broadcasting.
- August 30th - Ban on listening to foreign broadcasters in Austria. Violations against this face imprisonment, and later even the death penalty.
- September 1st - In Germany, the Ordinance on Extraordinary Broadcasting Measures comes into force. It makes the dissemination of messages from eavesdropped enemy broadcasters as well as the mere interception of foreign radio broadcasters a criminal offense ( broadcasting crime ).
- September 3 - British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain announced at 11:15 am local time (10.15 GMT ) on the BBC : "This country is at war with Germany" (this country is at war with Germany). The US President Franklin D. Roosevelt expressed in the 14th edition of his fireside chats ( Fireside Chats ) about the outbreak of the "European war" ( On European War ).
- September 11th - The Canadian CBC begins broadcasting the French-language radio series Un Homme et son Péché (roughly: “A man and his sins”) based on the novel of the same name by the French-Canadian writer Claude-Henri Grignon . The series proved to be extremely successful and remained in the program until 1961.
- October 1st - The first edition of the request concert for the Wehrmacht , which is aimed at Wehrmacht soldiers and their relatives, is broadcast for the first time by all Reich broadcasters.
- November - The large broadcasting hall of the Funkhaus Argentinerstraße in Vienna is officially opened with a Lehár concert .

- April 30 - At the opening of the World Expo in New York by Franklin D. Roosevelt , a speech by a US president will be televised for the first time.
- July 28th - The standard television receiver is presented at the 16th Great German Radio and Television Exhibition in Berlin . As a result of the outbreak of war, the device does not go into series production as planned. The approximately 50 completed copies of the E1 are distributed to hospitals and various departments.
- August 24 - The television station Paul Nipkow is shut down in connection with the preparations for war by order of the High Command of the Wehrmacht .
- September 1st - With the invasion of Poland by the Wehrmacht and the outbreak of World War II, the production and sale of televisions in the United Kingdom ceases. By then, almost 19,000 units had been sold.
