General
- Sony introduces the Hi8 video system, which is based on the Video 8 standard and offers a significant improvement in image and sound quality. Hi8 became widespread in the amateur field in the 1990s, but Hi8 camcorders are also built for professional use. In the same year, the company presented the CCD TR-55, which was initially only available in Japan and was the smallest and lightest camcorder in the world to date.
- January 1st - The NDR starts its own teletext service .
- April 15 - The IG Medien is founded at the unification congress in Hamburg through the merger of the "IG Druck und Papier" and the "IG Kunst, Kultur und Medien".
- April 21 - In Japan comes Game Boy on the market. From 1990 the handheld console is also available in Europe.
- May - The newly elected People's Congress meets in the Soviet Union, the sessions of which are also broadcast on the 2nd program of Soviet television. For the first time, the citizens of the country have the opportunity to experience the debates unfiltered, but this also leads to problems. Conservative MPs complain about this new openness, often pointing out that the active participation of the population has brought work in the companies to a standstill. Foreign media also report in detail, both on this fact and on the debates themselves (e.g. ORF lunchtime journals).
- June 5th - Launch of the DFS-Kopernikus telecommunications satellite . It starts broadcasting on August 1st.
- September 28 - Sony Corporation of America buys US Columbia Pictures for $ 3.4 billion. The much-noticed deal is part of a series of spectacular takeovers of traditional American companies by Japanese investors during the second half of the 1980s. Newsweek comments on the deal that Sony "bought a piece of the American soul" with Columbia Pictures .
- October 2nd - The Saarländischer Rundfunk sets up a teletext called SaaR-Text a teletext
- November 4th - The largest demonstration for freedom of the press, freedom of expression and free elections in the history of the GDR takes place on Alexanderplatz in East Berlin .
- November 9th - The German-German border opens .
- December 21 - The GDR Council of Ministers resolves to dissolve the State Committee for Broadcasting and the State Committee for Television .
Radio
- May 15 - The radio station B92 goes on air in Belgrade .
- August 24th - Federal Post Minister Christian Schwarz-Schilling launches the digital satellite radio at the international radio exhibition in Berlin .
- November 6th - Hit Radio FFH is the first private radio station in Hessen to receive a broadcast license.
- November 9 - opening of the Berlin Wall : one of the first radio station brings RIAS at 21h 30, a report by the recently opened border crossing at Bornholmer Strasse between the former Berlin districts of Pankow and Mitte .
- November 13 - England's first multicultural radio program, London Greek Radio , goes on the air.
- December 2nd - The Hessischer Rundfunk broadcasts the first episode of the radio series radio without hair .

- January 4th - The crime series Peter Strohm with Klaus Löwitsch premieres on the First German Television ( ARD ) and on FS1 ( ORF ) . Title of the first episode: Death of a Friend .
- January 4th - The US war series NAM - Service in Vietnam can be seen for the first time on RTLplus .
- January 10th - Four days before Robert Lembke's death , the ARD broadcasts the last episode of the quiz What am I? .
- January 10th - The German television series Das Nest premieres on First German Television.
- January 15th - The first edition of the talk show Explosiv - The hot chair can be seen on RTLplus .
- January 16 - The first episode of the long-term documentary Berlin - corner of Bundesplatz can be seen on ARD . The series depicts the everyday life of residents in the district around the Bundesplatz traffic junction in Berlin-Wilmersdorf between 1986 and 2009.
- January 18th - The Franco-German series Ein Lord für alle Fall (A Lord for All Cases) can be seen for the first time on the First German Television .
- January 28 - At the 47th Golden Globes in Los Angeles, the television series thirtysomething and Wonderful Years are honored.
- February 4th - Klack starts on RTLplus , moderated by Nicole Bierhoff .
- February 5th - The special interest broadcaster Eurosport , founded by some EBU institutions, goes on air.
- February 15 - RTLplus takes over Baretta for the first time .

- January 10th - American radio reporter Herbert Morrison dies at the age of 83. Morrison became known worldwide through his live report of the catastrophe of the airship LZ 129 “Hindenburg” on May 6, 1937.
- January 14th - Robert Lembke , German journalist and television presenter, dies in Munich at the age of 75 . Lembke was mainly recognized by the guess show What am I? famous.
- April 12th - Edi Finger , Austrian sports reporter dies at the age of 65 in Maria Enzersdorf .
- April 26 - Lucille Ball , American actress and television personality (numerous sitcoms under the names I love Lucy , 1951–1957, The Lucy Show , 1962–1968 or Here's Lucy , 1968–1974) dies at the age of 77 in Beverly Hills .
- April 27th - Matsushita Kōnosuke , Japanese entrepreneur, dies at the age of 94. Matsushita founded the Matsushita Elektrogeräte Fabrik in 1918 , from which the internationally sold brands JVC , Panasonic and Technics emerged after the Second World War .
- May 5th - Wolfgang Neuss , German cabaret artist, actor and television presenter ( people ) dies at the age of 65 in what was then West Berlin .
- June 15 - Victor French , American director and series actor ( Mark Gordon in An Angel on Earth ) dies at the age of 54 in Los Angeles .

- October 18 - Harvey Hart , American film director and television producer ( Spaceship Enterprise , Columbo ) dies in New York City at the age of 61 .
- November 1st - Hoimar von Ditfurth , German doctor, journalist and television presenter dies at the age of 68 in Freiburg im Breisgau .
- December 8th - Max Grundig , German entrepreneur and founder of the Grundig electronics group , dies at the age of 81 in Baden-Baden .
- 16 December - Marjorie Westbury , British actress, radio play speaker and singer, dies aged 84 in Maresfield near Uckfield , Sussex . She spoke for the BBC between 1945 and 1968 the role of Steve Temple in all Paul Temple radio plays .
- December 25th - Alfred Bohl , German actor, radio play and voice actor dies at the age of 80 in Weimar . He dubbed Nigel Bruce in 10 Sherlock Holmes films made between 1943 and 1946.
