- With the signing of the Austrian State Treaty (May 15) in the Belvedere in Vienna and the dissolution of the Allied offices of the Western occupying powers in the Federal Republic of Germany , the occupation and thus the immediate post-war period in both countries ended.

- May 22nd - The Jack Benny program switches from CBS radio to television.
- July 27th - The last frequencies of the American occupation transmitter Red-White-Red are switched off. On the same day, Die Russische Stunden - a propaganda program of the Soviet occupying power on Radio Vienna - is discontinued.
- November 17 - The French-speaking public broadcasters in France, Belgium, Canada and Switzerland join forces to form the Communauté des radios publiques de langue française (CRPLF).
- December 20 - The first issue of the news magazine Wir fade in Wir fade in can be heard on ORF radio .

- January 2nd - The first edition of the quiz show What am I? premiere with Robert Lembke.
- January 15 - The Benny Hill Show premieres on the BBC , but moves to the newly founded ITV that same year .
- April 1 - The US TV channel DuMont Television Network is broadcasting the last episode of the science fiction series Captain Video and His Video Rangers .
- April 23rd - The SDR begins broadcasting its own regional television program.
- August 1st - The television station on the Brocken , which also broadcasts GDR television programs to the west, starts operations.
- August 1st - The ORF starts its public television test operation. The program starts with the logo of Austrian television with St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna. The first broadcast is a panel discussion between the editors-in-chief of the most important Austrian daily newspapers.
- September 22nd - Independent Television (ITV) launches the UK's first private television operator.
- September 28 - In the US, the World Series will be broadcast in color for the first time.
