Streets and squares in Berlin
The overview of streets and squares in Berlin lists the individual articles of districts of the German capital, in which the corresponding localities are described. The history of the respective districts is dealt with in these lists only with reference to streets and squares. Instead, they contain information about the names of the streets and squares, their length and dimensions, the origin of the name and the time of naming.
In addition to the aforementioned objects, allotment gardens (colonies), parks, cemeteries, special areas are included in the articles of the respective Berlin districts and, if necessary, described or linked to main articles. As far as the context shows, comments on former or planned streets are given in separate lists in order to better describe historical references to the development. Information relating to the district itself is given under its special lemma.
Basics
In § 2 of the Berlin Roads Act, public roads are defined: “Public roads in the sense of this act are streets, paths and squares that are dedicated to public traffic.” The streets, squares and green spaces are the public space that is used for everyday and tourist routes and stay, is used for encounters and city experiences. This is where the demands of different functions such as transport, sales, events and political rallies collide. The law also mentions federal highways and private roads as additional types. All these types of streets are included in the district lists. Federal motorways on the territory of the districts are only listed as an overview, in some cases with lane lengths. The official documents were primarily used for the selection and the information in the lists. For historical information, these are preferably the Berlin address books (which are available online until 1943), and in some cases also historical plans. Private roads were only included if they were dedicated under official measures or if there is a special significance. Such (semi-public, officially designated) private roads are dedicated at the request of the residents or owners and remain in the right of way without restrictions. Private roads that are not included in the Berlin street cleaning plan are not included in the lists.
The streets of Berlin and other objects, such as KGA , parks, bridges, are numbered nationwide and sorted into different categories. The StEP class comes from the road development plan (as a partial plan of the urban development plan ), the RBS class is derived from the street directory of the “Regional Reference System” (RBS) and the “OKSTRA class” is the categorization from the object catalog for roads and transport (OKSTRA) derived. Examples: (1) Fürstenwalder Damm has the street number 45930, is marked in the StEP with category II as a higher-level road connection, has OKSTRA class G (municipal road) and RBS class "STRA", has a carriageway in both directions (" B ”) is passable and is located in the districts of Köpenick , Friedrichshagen and Rahnsdorf . (2) With the number 8815 the Bohnsdorfer Schirmpilzstraße is listed in the road development plan as “V” (without StEP recording), according to Okstra as “N” and in the RBS as “FUWE”. If such information is relevant, it is included as a comment in the street lists of the districts. The naming procedure in accordance with Section 5, Paragraph 1, Clause 2 of the Berlin Roads Act applies to naming and dedication. For this purpose, inquiries in the land surveying offices of the districts and at the office for statistics clarify that the street names for Berlin are unique.
The information in the district lists for the total length of all streets in the district is determined from the distance between the two end points. The lengths given in the official lists (RBS: regional reference system) are based on road maintenance requirements , so parallel or other lanes that belong to the road can be included. The practical street length was mostly determined with tools from Google Earth in the middle of the respective street and rounded to ten meters, so the information on the official measurements are not identical.
