Pop rap (or hip-pop) is hip hop with a pop music influence. The style became popular in the early 1990s, as hip hop music found commercial success. Pop rappers were more radio-friendly than artists in other hip hop genres. It was not uncommon for the songs to have raunchy subject matter, but on average the lyrics were not as obscene as those of other rap artists. By the turn of the millennium, gangsta rap and other more offensive forms took over the mainstream as hip-pop. Eminem gave a nod to the occurrence with his mock boy band single "My Band" from D12 World.

| Lee Pace
Field Cate (at age 9)
| 29
| A pie maker who can return the dead to life with one touch. If the dead person stays alive for more than 60 seconds, someone else has to die in that person's place. If, after bringing the person back to life, he touches them a second time, the person becomes dead permanently.

History
| Charlotte "Chuck" Charles
The first commercial successful rap song mixed up with pop and funk was Der Kommissar by the Austrian musician Falco. It was among the Billboard Hot 100 (#72). Pop-rap has been popular since its beginning in the late-1980s, after various hip hop artists commenced entering the mainstream. LL Cool J just may have been the very first pop-rapper in history, when he rose to prominence on his 1985 debut album Radio. When he joined Russell Simmons' Def Jam label and decided to try merging rap with pop and R&B influences, some people were skeptical that it would ever work.
| Anna Friel
Sammi Hanratty (at age 8)
| 28
| Ned's childhood neighbor and boyhood crush. She was murdered on a cruise ship under mysterious circumstances. Ned brings her back to life, and has to be very careful not to touch her again. She has a wealth of information on odd and uncommon topics due to reading a large variety of books while growing up in a relatively repressed environment. She can also speak various languages as shown in the episode "Dummy", such as Japanese. At first, Chuck lived in the same room as Ned, but ever since Olive quit and mysteriously disappeared, she moved into Olive's old apartment.

However in the end, one of LL's singles, the rap-ballad "I Need Love", actually became a success. The origins of Pop-rap began with artists such as Tone-Loc, and DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince putting emphasis right on their good-humored, storytelling skills, to great chart success. The were followers who also began recording similarly amiable party tunes and novelties. Since there had been a possibility of accepting this as real music, other emcees started to play up rap's connection to pop, R&B, and dance music.
| Emerson Cod
| Chi McBride
| Late 30s
| A private investigator who, after finding out about Ned's gift for bringing the dead back to life, becomes Ned's business partner. Never fails to voice his own opinion out loud. He enjoys relaxing with arts and crafts hobbies, especially knitting. In the final episode of the first season he reveals that he has a daughter that he presumably has not talked with in some time and Ned didnt know about until that episode as mentioning her hurts Emerson. Emerson is often seen driving his like-new 1960s Lincoln Continental sedan. He also is seen to like pop-up books in the episode "Smell of Success" and his favorite pie flavor is rhubarb pie.

|- valign="top"
Many pop-rap hits sampled hits as a backing track, "U Can't Touch This" by MC Hammer being the prime example, lifting the bass riff from Rick James' "Super Freak". Pop-rap artists were sometimes taken to court for the use of borrowing hooks from previous songs by other artists

Other pop-rap M.C.s developed their own sounds, such as LL Cool J and Salt-N-Pepa. Very little of this commercially minded music was met with acclaim from hip hop enthusiasts or critics, however - Puff Daddy's "loop it and leave it" style of sampling, which most of the time just consisted of rapping over someone else's instrumental, was criticized.
| Vivian Charles
| Ellen Greene
| upper middle age
| Chuck's aunt who was part of a synchronized swimming duo with her sister, Lily, who shares her personality disorder and love for fine cheese. However, unlike her sister, Vivian is more positive toward life. She is good with taxidermy.

She is romantically interested in being touched by the Pie Maker, but due to Chuck "faking her own death" and coming out of nowhere, finds it hard to do so. She developed a relationship with Chuck's aunts when she began delivering pies to them, but has not told them of Chuck's continued presence to avoid hurting them. ===Alfredo Aldarisio===
Alfredo Aldarisio (Raúl Esparza) is a homeopathic salesman who has a fear that Earth's atmosphere could be sucked away from space and treats himself with his own herbal wares. He secretly admires Olive Snook and gave Chuck a sample pack of antidepressants. Olive also secretly admires him, even though she still longs for the Pie Maker, but she has not yet had a chance to tell him this due to his going away on a trip.

Oscar Vibenius
Oscar Vibenius (Paul Reubens) is an olfactory expert who works for the Department of Water and Power. He was almost framed by his former partner, Napoleon LeNez, for attempting to kill him, when in fact LeNez was staging his own attempts to try to publicize his latest book. He becomes intrigued with Chuck after noticing something slightly different in her scent, and he stole her mother's sweater to further investigate his suspicions. In Corpsicle, Chuck gave him a sample of her hair so that he could continue his investigation into her scent, but he returned it to her without testing it in an effort to gain her trust. Beforehand, he had also shaved Digby's behind, as he was also interested in his peculiar scent.

Manuel
EndMultiCol
Manuel (Omar Avila) polishes the floors of the Pie Hole. He and Olive know each other through both staying after hours to clean up.

Ned's Mother
Ned's mother (Tina Gloss) appears only in flashbacks. She passed away from a brain aneurysm while dusting Ned off with a broom. Ned brought her back to life for more than one minute and as a consequence, accidently killed Chuck's father, Charles Charles. That night, she, Ned and Chuck waited for Chuck's aunts to take her. Afterward, Ned's Mother tucked him into his bed and gave him a goodnight kiss, one that ended up being her very last. This is how Ned learned the rules of his powers: First touch, life, second touch, dead again, forever.

Ned's Father
hiphop
After his mother died, Ned's father (Jon Eric Price) sent him away to the Longborough School for Boys in the town of North Thrush. His parting words to him were "I'll be back". This would turn out to be a lie as one Halloween, Ned got a postcard that said he moved away from his house. So that night, Ned went to the new house to find his father with a new wife and two new twin boys. Since Ned was dressed up as a ghost, his father did not recognize him, so he gave him a Honeycomb Chew and wished him a happy Halloween. According to Lily, Ned's Father was a "jackass...who did us all a favor, [Ned] included."
