Davy Jones' Locker is a fictional place mentioned in the film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest by Will Turner's father, Bootstrap Bill. It acts as a purgatory where those indentured to Davy Jones can serve out their debt.

An entry into the Locker can be done by the Kraken. The Kraken, a gaint sea monster drags sailors and their ship down into the oceans, eventually entering into the Locker. Another entry, described by Tia Dalma, is to sail to World's End.

The Locker itself appears to be a seemingly endless desert, connected with an equally endless sea. The Locker holds many strange creatures, such as the crabs that aided Jack in transporting the stranded Black Pearl back into the sea. The Locker may be seen differently to other prisoners, based on their fears and nightmares. For example, Jack loves the ocean, therefore, the desert is an eternal nightmare to him. The endless sea, known as the Sea of Lost Souls, is filled with the bodies of those died at sea. The bodies were unable to reach the afterlife, forsaken by Davy Jones.

Getting back to the living world requires the aid of Sao Feng's navigational chart. The chart contains unclear and puzzle-solving messages, which makes the chart difficult and confusing to understand. Jack, however, used forms of reverse logic to help his understanding of the message, and eventually surfaced into the living world along with his crew.

Isla Cruces

Template:Pirates of the Caribbean location

Isla Cruces is a fictional island in the 2006 film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. The relevant scenes were actually filmed in Dominica.

Significance

In Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Isla Cruces (Crosses Island) is the fictional island where Davy Jones buried the Dead Man's Chest containing his beating heart. The once-inhabited island appears to have been abandoned. The previous occupants are unknown, but the partially-remaining stone buildings indicate some European-type colony (probably Spanish) was once established here. A church ruin provides the backdrop for a fight between Jack Sparrow, James Norrington, and Will Turner.

Why Davy Jones buried the Dead Man's Chest on Isla Cruces is not revealed in the film. However, the film's writers, Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio imply in the POTC: Dead Man's Chest DVD audio commentary that Jones may have chosen an island because he is unable to step on land and the Kraken is unable to get to it. Jones may also have used Isla Cruces because it is a plague island that remains deserted.

Isla de Muerta

Template:Pirates of the Caribbean location

Isla de Muerta is an island featured in the 2003 film Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. It is a mysterious island where the Black Pearl's pirate crew hide treasure. Its name's literal translation should actually be "Island of Dead" or "Dead Island", although the correct wording in spanish would be "Isla Muerta" or "Isla de la Muerte". It is based off one of the 5 islands in the archipelago "The Five Deaths." The Five Deaths are based on an old Central American tale. A man is offered 5 ways to die by a king he has offended (reasons vary). The man chooses all of them. He travels to each island in the Five Death chain, and defeats all of the deadly challenges. The man is then rewarded (again, ways vary). The five islands are named after the ways he is offered to die. Isla Muerta is the final island, where any type of death goes. Another of the Five Deaths, Isla Sorna, features prominently in the Jurassic Park books and films.

History

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

According to Sparrow it is, "an isle of the dead which [sic] cannot be found, except for those who already know where it is." To locate it, Captain Sparrow uses his unique compass — rather than pointing north, it points to what its holder most desires. What Sparrow desires is the Black Pearl, anchored at the island.

The isle is blanketed in thick fog and surrounded by a graveyard of sunken ships; its waters swarm with hammerhead sharks and shoals of fish. It appears to be, for the most part, largely unexplored, save for a maze of caves where Captain Barbossa's crew hoards treasure looted from ports and ships throughout the Caribbean. Here is where the dreaded Chest of Cortez containing the cursed Aztec gold is kept.

Captain Barbossa tells Elizabeth Swann that 882 solid gold coins were placed in a stone chest and given to Cortés by the Aztecs. "Blood money paid to stem the slaughter he wreaked upon them with his armies. But the greed of Cortés was insatiable. So the heathen gods placed upon the gold a terrible curse. Any mortal that removes but a single piece from that stone chest shall be punished for eternity."

The treasure cave where the Aztec gold is kept..

The curse is the epitome of, be careful what you wish for, and any person who takes even a single coin from the chest is granted invulnerability as one of the undead. They may walk the earth forever, and no one can stop them from taking anything they want. But no amount of food will sate their hunger, no amount of drink will quench their thirst, no amount of heat will warm their bodies, and no amount of pleasurable company will slake their lust. In short, the world is theirs for the taking, but nothing they take will give satisfaction, for only when every piece of gold, anointed with the blood of each thief, is returned to the chest can the curse be lifted.

To lift the curse, the pirates gather on Isla de Muerta to return the final medallion to the chest, unaware Jack Sparrow and the British Royal Navy are also headed there. They found the final medallion with Elizabeth Swann and believed her to be the only child of "Bootstrap Bill" Turner (who was then trapped at the bottom of the ocean). The island becomes the site of a climatic battle between the undead pirates and the navy, as well as the final duel between Barbossa and Jack Sparrow. Barbossa is killed, and his body is left amongst the pirates' swag. His crew of undead thieves is soon brought back to the true form of living and either died having a sword or knife stuck into them or rejoined Captain Sparrow's crew.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

In Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, it's learned that the island and its treasure were reclaimed by the sea. Barbossa's corpse was presumably sunk, however Tia Dalma was able to restore him to life before the events of Dead Man's Chest, as half way through the film, you see Jack the Monkey, his pet, runs to a boot when let out of his cage. His pet monkey, Jack, however, remained cursed, for the monkey took a single piece of gold from the stone chest, returning him to a cursed life. Due to the island being sunk, it is likely that the monkey would remain cursed forever.

Other Media

Kingdom Hearts 2

In the video game Kingdom Hearts II, the world of Port Royal is based on Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl. As such, Isla de Muerta is featured as visitable area in the game, and the one in which Sora and his allies do battle with Captain Barbossa and a Heartless dispatched by Pete. Later on, Luxord of Organization XIII steals the chest of cursed gold from Isla de Muerta, and four of the medallions must be retrieved from his Gambler Nobodies. After retrieving the chest, Sora and co. dump it overboard.

Pelegosto

Pelegosto is a fictional island in the 2006 film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. The relevant scenes were actually filmed on Dominica.

History

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

When Bootstrap Bill Turner (acting as an agent for Davy Jones) marks Captain Jack Sparrow with the Black Spot, Jack races for the nearest land to escape the Kraken, a sea monster that can only attack in open water. He lands on Pelegosto, a typical Caribbean island with sandy beaches and thick jungles, but inhabited by cannibals. The crew is taken captive. Several crewmen are eaten and their bones made into cages to hold the others. Jack is made chief. The cannibals believe that he is a God trapped in a human body.

Searching for Jack, Will Turner finds the Black Pearl beached on Pelegosto. He is also captured and imprisoned with the crew. Gibbs tells him the cannibals believe Jack must be eaten to free his spirit from its "fleshy prison." They plan on killing him immediately by roasting him over a fire.

The crew, inside suspended cages, swung themselves forward, and grabbing vines, climb up the cliff. However a tribe member spots them and sounds the alarm. The surviving crewmen escape to the ship and are quickly joined by Jack, who escaped when the natives left to chase the crew. They encounter Pintel and Ragetti attempting to steal the Pearl, and, quickly recruiting the two who claim they were only getting the ship ready to sail, head to sea.

According the the film's writers in the Dead Man's Chest DVD commentary, Pelegosto is the same island Jack told Royal Navy Marines, Mullroy and Murtogg about in Pirates 1. He is heard telling them, " . . . and then they made me their chief . . ." before being interrupted by Elizabeth Swann falling into the water.

Shipwreck Island

Shipwreck Island is a fictional island in the 2007 film, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. It is unique, in terms of the island composing of shipwrecks.

In Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Shipwreck Cove is the meeting place of the Brethren Court, nestled in Shipwreck Island and the home of the Shipwreck City. Before getting to Shipwreck Cove every ship must pass through the Devil's Throat, which claims several ships each year[citation needed]. Shipwreck Cove is considered to be an impregnable fortress, well-supplied, and could withstand almost any siege.

Singapore

The city is full of waterways with crudely built wooden buildings. The scene was shown in At World's End where Hector Barbossa and Elizabeth Swann, visit to request navigational charts, a crew and a ship to rescue Jack Sparrow from Davy Jones' Locker.

Tortuga

Template:Pirates of the Caribbean location Captain Jack Sparrow and Will Turner, in hot pursuit of Barbossa, docked the stolen ship, HMS Interceptor, in Tortuga and began searching for a crew. Their conscripts included Joshamee Gibbs, Anamaria, Cotton (and his parrot), and Marty.

Tortuga made a second appearance near the beginning of the second film; Will Turner, released to find Jack Sparrow, made Tortuga his first stop. He was ultimately successful in finding Sparrow on Pelegosto Island, but it was not revealed if he got the information from a denizen of Tortuga or not.

Jack Sparrow returned to Tortuga after escaping Pelegosto's cannibals. His goal appeared to be the enlistment of one hundred pirates, so that he could barter their souls to Davy Jones in exchange for his own. However, the crew he found proved useful instead in a final confrontation with the Kraken, Jones' monstrous secret weapon. Besides securing a replacement crew, (as most were lost on Pelegosto Island) Jack also found his past ally, Elizabeth Swann. Jack also enlisted the aid of the down-and-out James Norrington who had gone into hiding, as a drunken brute, as a disastrous military manouver cost him his commission. He starts a humorous fight attempting to kill Jack. At the very end of At World's End, Jack is in Tortuga when he realizes the crew of the Pearl left him for Barbossa.

In this video game, the player can replay the Tortuga-scenes from Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Minor Locations

  • Dead Kraken Island, not the actual name but rather the island on which the kraken was found dead in the third film, and where the crew of the Black Pearl is captured by the Empress.
  • Parlay Sandbar, once again, not the actual name. It is a small sandbar where Cutler Beckett swapped Will Turner for Jack Sparrow in and Elizabeth promised that Beckett would die. It was seen only in At World's End.
  • Frozen Ocean, a frozen ocean that is traveled through on the quest to rescue Jack Sparrow. It may be either the Northwest Passage or the Bering Sea.
  • Jack's Island, the island that Jack was marooned on and "made governor of" by Barbossa twice. It was a storage for smugglers the first time, but the business was put out, presumably by Norrington, long before the second.
  • The Run Aground Island, where a trading ship ran aground. The crew was later taken by Davy Jones and his crew, and Will Turner was unfortunately among them.
  • Turkish Prison, a rocky island with an apparently inhumane prison built atop its spires. It once held a picture of Davy Jones' key within its walls, but Jack Sparrow successfully recovered it.
