Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides (coll .: Pirates of the Caribbean 4 , Original Title: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides ) is an American pirate film by director Rob Marshall from 2011. It is the fourth film of the Pirates- of the Caribbean series .

action

Spanish fishermen pull an old man from the sea who is said to have discovered the legendary source of eternal youth . The case is brought before the Spanish king, who immediately starts his fleet in search of the fountain of youth.

Meanwhile, Gibbs and Jack Sparrow face each other in a court case in London in which pirates are continuously convicted. Gibbs and Jack Sparrow escape because Jack pretends to be a judge and has bribed the prison carriage driver. However, this was also bribed by the British government, and so the journey does not end in freedom, but in front of St James's Palace . Jack is brought before the British King George II, who asks him to look for the source of eternal youth for the British. For this the king would provide him with the ship, crew and Barbossa as captain. Jack refuses the offer when he learns that Barbossa has lost the Black Pearl and flees the palace. In a port tavern he meets his father, Captain Teague, who explains to him that three things are needed for the source of eternal youth to confer immortality: a mermaid's tear and two special goblets.

As Jack learned from Gibbs and his father, someone appears to be posing as Jack Sparrow and is looking for a crew. In the tavern, Jack confronts his imitator and has to learn that he is Angelica, one of his former lovers. Angelica overwhelms him, and Jack is stunned by a zombie. When he wakes up, he is on the Queen Anne's Revenge , the ship of the infamous pirate Blackbeard . Angelica is the first officer here and pretends to be Blackbeard's daughter. The sailors do not know that they are looking for the source of eternal youth and are commanded by zombies. The captured missionary Philip is also on board the Revenge . Jack learns that one of the officers can see the future and has foreseen that Blackbeard only has two weeks to live before he is murdered by a one-legged man who is believed to be Barbossa. Meanwhile, Gibbs, who also knows the location of the source, is taken into service by the British fleet. A race now begins between the Spanish sailors, the British fleet and Blackbeard.

To get to the mermaid's tears, Blackbeard sets a trap for the mermaids at White Cap Bay : He lets some of his men drift in boats as bait and lures the mermaids with artificial light from a lighthouse, while the rest of him Men with fishing nets waiting on the shore. When the mermaids attack and pull the majority of the men underwater, Jack blows up the lighthouse and one of the falling stone blocks traps one of the mermaids and cannot escape. All the other mermaids escape and only she is captured. Missionary Philip falls in love with her and gives her the name "Syrena".

Arrived on the island, on which the source of eternal youth is said to be, Jack Sparrow separates from the group to get the two goblets. Before that, however, he learns from Angelica that one also needs a sacrifice for eternal youth: the ritual consists in filling both goblets with the holy water of the fountain of youth, but only one of the goblets contains the mermaid's tear. Whoever drinks from the cup with the tear will receive all the remaining years of life of the person who drinks from the other cup. As all years of life are deducted from this person, he must die. Meanwhile, Blackbeard wants to make the mermaid Syrena cry in order to get to the tear. When he notices that she has also fallen in love with Philip, he apparently kills the missionary. But Syrena can control herself and does not cry. When Philip, who had only been drugged, wakes up again, he returns to Syrena to free her. Only when Philip confesses to her how much she means to him does she cry for joy, and Blackbeard catches a tear. She is then tied to a post by Blackbeard's people while she is half-hanging in the water, so that she is supposed to slowly burn in the sunlight after dawn.

Meanwhile, Jack finds out that the Spaniards were faster and already have the goblets in their possession. Together with Barbossa, whom he meets on the ship from Ponce de León , he sneaks into the Spanish camp and steals the goblets. It turns out that Barbossa is only looking for the source to meet Blackbeard and get revenge on him for his lost leg and the Black Pearl . Jack brings the goblets to Blackbeard while Barbossa and his company follow him. The group finally finds the source of eternal youth, and a battle ensues between pirates, the English and the Spanish troops who are advancing. Phillip is injured in this fight. The Spaniards destroy the "pagan place" and throw the goblets into the water, while Blackbeard and Angelica are mortally wounded by Barbossa's poisoned blade. Jack tries to save Angelica, whom he still loves. Syrena, who has meanwhile been freed by Philip, hands Jack the goblets. Jack asks Angelica and Blackbeard who wants to sacrifice themselves for the other. Angelica selflessly wants to save her father, Blackbeard reaches for the supposed goblet with the tear without further ado. When the fate of both seems sealed, Jack reveals that he has switched the goblets, so that Blackbeard dies and Angelica remains alive.

Syrena tells Philip that if he asks, she can save him. With the last of his strength Philip asks the mermaid for forgiveness, whereupon she kisses him and pulls him down into the water.

Captain Barbossa calls in Blackbeard's sword (which he can use to influence the rigging of ships) and the survivors from Blackbeard's crew. You return to the Queen Anne's Revenge . Barbossa takes command, takes off his royal uniform and becomes a pirate again. His first command is to sail to Tortuga .

When Angelica is angry with Jack and he says he cannot trust her, he exposes her with a pistol with just one shot on a desert island. He wants to leave the island, but she holds him back and tells him that he is pregnant. Thereupon both confess their love for each other, but Jack shrugs back millimeters before a kiss. When Jack leaves, Angelica shoots after him but does not hit him.

On the beach, Jack meets Gibbs again, who stole Blackbeard's collection of miniature ships including the Black Pearl from Queen Anne's Revenge . Both are puzzling over how to free the Black Pearl .

After the credits, you see a voodoo doll previously used by Blackbeard and the quartermaster being washed up by Jack on the beach on the deserted island where Angelica is stuck.

Production background

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides continues the previous three parts, Pirates of the Caribbean from 2003, Pirates of the Caribbean from 2006, and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End from 2007. It is a co-production by Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films .

The film is based in part on the fantasy novel In Stranger Tides by Tim Powers . Powers sold the rights to his book to Disney. The main character Jack Shandy was replaced by Jack Sparrow - played by Johnny Depp . Blackbeard and the Fountain of Youth were also carried over into the film from Power's novel. Some new characters have been added, such as Blackbeard's daughter Angelica, who is played by Penélope Cruz . Since the actress was pregnant while filming, some scenes were doubled by her sister Mónica Cruz .

The film was announced back in 2008 and filming began in June 2010. While most of its predecessors were filmed in the Caribbean, the production of Pirates of the Caribbean took place in Hawaii . The film has been released in Disney Digital 3-D , IMAX 3D and traditional two-dimensional formats.

The film premiered on May 7th at Disneyland Resort . It was released in German-language cinemas on May 19 and in US cinemas on May 20, 2011.

The film series is based on a themed ride that opened at Disneyland Resort on March 18, 1968. Pirates of the Caribbean is considered one of the most popular and well-known Disney attractions.

Lawsuit against Disney

In 2008, Off sued Disney in order to subsequently receive a considerably higher fee than contractually agreed. He justified the lawsuit by stating that if a work is a significant commercial success, according to copyright law, artists are entitled to participate in this success beyond fees already paid (noticeable disproportion according to Section 32a (2) sentence 1 UrhG). Off was supported by the Association of Dubbing Actors (IVS), because the lawsuit is of fundamental importance for the association. Disney denied the claim on the grounds that a voice actor, like a news anchor, is not an artist. Off lost in the first two instances, but was partially right before the Federal Court of Justice . In contrast to the lower courts, the Federal Supreme Court saw a contribution in a synchronization that could certainly have a certain significance for the work of art film, and referred the procedure to the lower court to re-examine whether the fee was already appropriate. Such a claim can only be ruled out without a case-by-case examination with very low creative performance.

Reviews

“The films have really boosted the old-fashioned amusement for the screen, now also with the obligatory, but here rather dispensable, 3-D effects. And like in the carousel, you actually like to do a lap with Jack Sparrow, because it used to be fun. At least until you notice that you are only moving in circles. "

“ After the rather disappointing parts two and three, the curse of the Caribbean makers have come to terms with the monumental CGI effect battles this year, preferring to Michael Bay and his Transformers 3 , which starts a month later . Instead, the new director Rob Marshall prefers to focus on classic adventure entertainment and, above all, thanks to a Penélope Cruz who is always on par with Johnny Depp, gives the audience an entertaining 140 minutes of fast-paced summer cinema. "

“In terms of originality and esprit, Stranger Tides easily surpasses its predecessor. However, this time too, the creators couldn't help but artificially inflate the thin story. Without some shallow dialogue and unnecessary story twists, pirate fun would have had what it takes to become a popcorn classic. Conclusion: Gaudy pirate spectacle, which despite some length offers the viewer two and a half hours of humorous blockbuster entertainment. "

“The look roughly corresponds to that of its predecessors, like Sparrow's eyeliner with correspondingly strong paint application and contrasts in costumes and equipment. Lush, real jungle green and sections of the coastline seamlessly merge with the opulently furnished studio sets or original locations by John Myhre (Oscar-winning for The Geisha ) and his team. Perfect escapism cinema, to be continued. "

Pirates of the Caribbean on Stranger Tides does a few things right, others clearly not, and there are many things that can be argued about. Johnny Depp is nice to look at again, but the excitement of the Jack Sparrow show is now extremely low and the story has so little water under the bow that every sandbank becomes a devil's reef. Nonetheless, the film has its winning moments, but also plenty of lengths that spoil the fun again. In addition, the departure of two essential figures has a noticeable negative effect, as the compensation does not really want to succeed. One would like to wish Captain Jack Sparrow always wind in his sails, but unfortunately this idea does not get beyond a lull. "

“The adventure film comes up with furious saber acrobatics, fairytale sailor's thread, charismatic old stars and comic skirmishes for the weird main character, but narrative is far from rejuvenating the film series or even expanding it with original ideas. The 3D version does not provide any additional visual values. "

continuation

The script for another sequel, Part 5 of the series, was already ready when Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides started . The film was scheduled for 2013. Since the screenplay by Terry Rossio was not good enough for the producers and the lead actor Johnny Depp, a new screenplay was commissioned, which was written by Jeff Nathanson . The theatrical release was announced in spring 2013 for July 10, 2015, but this date was revoked in September 2013. In May 2013 it was announced that Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg would direct the project. The film is titled Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge ( Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales ) and premiered in Shanghai on May 11, 2017. In addition to Johnny Depp, Brenton Thwaites and Javier Bardem have taken on leading roles, and Kaya Scodelario has also taken on a role. The film was shot in 2015.
