Black Pearl (or Project Y712), built by Oceanco in Alblasserdam / Netherlands , is currently (2018) the third longest mega yacht in the list of longest sailing yachts with a length of 106 meters. It belongs to Russian billionaire Oleg Burlakov and is believed to have cost $ 200 million.

history

Inspired by the 88-meter-long Maltese Falcon (built in 2006), Project Solar began when Ken Freivokh was signed by the owner in July 2010 to do the design and styling of the project. This initially resulted in a 96-meter-long, preliminary concept, code-named Nautilus . By November 2011 it was extended to 106 meters and a model was built. In 2012, Oceanco was selected as the shipyard and the Nuvolari Lenard office, which had worked with Oceanco on the construction of several mega yachts, joined the design team. The owner participated intensively in the development process. He was particularly involved in the design of the innovative bug .

In September 2016 the Black Pearl was rolled out of the shipyard hall, whereupon the innovative rig was installed. The sea trials were due in the summer of 2017. In January 2018, the Black Pearl was still at its equipment quay in the Nieuw Mathenesse port of Rotterdam.

construction

Given the involvement in the development of the Maltese Falcon and its DynaRig concept, Dykstra Naval Architects were introduced by Ken Freivokh to the owner and the Nautilus concept, in which they then acted as naval architects. As a result of the collaboration, the Dykstra team was able to further develop the DynaRig system they designed and used at the Maltese Falcon .

Extended Bow

As the preliminary concept progressed, the UK-based studio contracted Devonport Yachts (Pendennis Shipyard) to conduct a technical study of the yacht in order to create the tender package that was presented to seven leading shipyards in Australia, Europe and the United States in June 2011 has been. The Dutch company Oceanco was ultimately chosen by the owner to take over the construction. Nuvolari Lenard's office influenced the building with some improvements such as the three emblematic, elliptical hull windows and parts of the structure including the further development of the distinctive arches. As the process continued, the hull design evolved with active input from the owner. Under his influence, these modifications gradually evolved into the negative " armored cruiser " Steven. Contrary to this concept, which can be seen in the pictures and in the model, an additional nose was finally placed on the bow and thus the radical design was devalued.

drive

The Black Pearl is a so-called Dynaship ; the drive is provided by fifteen sails attached to three masts . The individual square sail surfaces are extended "from the center of the mast" - similar to a curtain - to the ends of the aerodynamically curved yards or rolled back into the mast when the wind increases . Each sail can be controlled individually and the ship can be adapted to any wind conditions. This arrangement increases the aerodynamic efficiency as there is no pressure loss between the five sails of a mast. Contrary to the usual design, the gaffs are not rotatably attached to the mast, but the mast is rotated to give the sails the desired angle of attack to the wind. Since rotating masts require a more complicated stay , the Dynarig of the Black Pearl has unstayed masts that can be rotated below deck . For driving with insufficient wind or for maneuvering, the Black Pearl has a machine system consisting of two MTU diesel engines that act on two propellers and should enable a speed of 17.5 kn. The system is equipped with a travel energy recovery system that uses the propellers to generate electrical energy while sailing. In the course of the further equipment, around 50% of the Black Pearl's sails will be covered with flexible solar cells in order to reduce the ship's dependence on fossil fuel. It is expected that the Black Pearl will be able to make a transatlantic voyage without burning diesel.

Interior decoration

As is usual with mega yachts, there is little or no information about the interior of the Black Pearl . The Italian office Nuvolari & Lenard, which has already fitted out some of Oceanco's megayachts, including the Vibrant Curiosity , Seven Seas and Alpha Nero , has been entrusted with the equipment. Based on drawings by Nuvolari & Lenard, the interior is kept in a classic style similar to the Empire .
