Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides

Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge (coll .: Fluch der Karibik 5 , original title: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales , int .: Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge ) is the fifth film of the Pirates-of-the -Caribbean saga . As the main actor, Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow can be seen again, while Joachim Rønning is directing for the first time together with Espen Sandberg . The film was shot exclusively in Australia in 2015 and premiered on May 11, 2017 in Shanghai and on May 25, 2017 in Germany.

action

Armando Salazar, captain of a ship with a crew of the undead , wants to take revenge on Captain Jack Sparrow, because it is his fault that the ship of the former pirate hunter Salazar steered into the Devil's Triangle , a bay loaded with a curse. There Salazar and his crew including the ship were cursed and have been trapped in the bay as the living dead ever since. Because Jack carelessly gives away his compass because of a bottle of rum, they manage to leave the bay.

At the same time, a young woman named Carina Smyth is on the run. She was sentenced to death because people believed she was a witch. She reads the stars and looks for Poseidon's trident . There she met Henry Turner, the young son of William Turner, who was being held with a curse on the ship “Flying Dutchman”. When Henry hears what Carina is up to, he joins her and they soon find Jack Sparrow in a dungeon on Saint Martin . After the trio escapes the planned execution of Jack and Carina with the help of Jack's well-known crew, they set off to find the magical trident on the high seas. Jack needs it because only this one can stop Salazar, whereas Carina sees it as her job to find the trident with the help of a book by her father, which she never got to know.

Meanwhile, Salazar gradually sinks the mighty fleet of Barbossa, who now sees himself as the ruler of the seas. When Barbossa finds out, he lets Salazar visit him to make him the following offer: Barbossa should find Jack Sparrow for Salazar and hand him over. Barbossa has until sunrise for this. In fact, Barbossa and Salazar use Barbossa's compass to locate Jack on an island to which he was barely able to escape, since Salazar cannot set foot on the mainland without dying. Barbossa eventually finds Jack, Henry and Carina and joins them to find the trident. In doing so, he betrays Salazar, who therefore slaughters almost Barbossa's entire crew. In order to escape from the island, Barbossa frees the Black Pearl from the bottle in which the ship has been imprisoned since Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides .

The four set sail together, with Carina showing the way with her astronomical knowledge and her book. Salazar and a Royal Navy ship under Lieutenant Scarfield go into pursuit. When the Black Pearl has almost reached the island on which the trident is said to be hidden, Salazar destroys the Royal Navy ship and takes Henry Turner prisoner, in whose body he dives in order to be able to go ashore. After a fight between Salazar, Jack and Carina, they finally manage to free Salazar, his crew and all the other cursed at sea from their curses by destroying the trident with the help of Henry, who had been freed by Salazar shortly before. Since the whole thing happened on the seabed within a divided sea and the sea begins to close after the curse is lifted, Barbossa and the crew of the Black Pearl try to save Jack, Henry and Carina with the help of an anchor. The now mortal Salazar also makes it to this anchor. Barbossa makes the decision to sacrifice himself in particular for Carina, whose father he is himself, which he reveals to her shortly before his plunge into the depths. He takes Salazar with him, and both are covered by the closing sea.

Henry and Carina, who from now on calls themselves Barbossa, return to their homeland, where William, whose curse has also been broken, appears on the horizon and can hug his son, who has not been seen for years, and his beloved Elizabeth. Jack Sparrow, who observes the action from the Black Pearl through a telescope, sets off on new adventures with his compass, which points towards the horizon.

A post-credit scene shows Will Turner startle from a dream in which Davy Jones approaches his and Elizabeth's bed. However, there are traces (barnacles) on the floor indicating that it wasn't just a dream, suggesting a possible sequel.

production

Emergence

In January 2013, almost two years after the previous film Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides was shown in theaters, the Hollywood Reporter wrote that Jeff Nathanson would write the script for the fifth film in the Pirates of the Caribbean series. This makes it the first film in the series that was not written by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio . At the end of May 2013, Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg were confirmed as directors, which is due, among other things, to the Oscar nomination for their film Kon-Tiki and the limited budget by Disney. After the failure of the film Lone Ranger  (2013), with which the studio lost around 190 million US dollars and which was developed by Gore Verbinski , Jerry Bruckheimer and Johnny Depp , the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean film was only released in 2014 the production release granted. Another reason for the late release was issues with the script. The release was finally announced for July 7, 2017, six years after the previous film. With the successful launch of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in the run-up to Christmas 2015, Star Wars: Episode VIII was postponed from May to December 2017. As a result, Disney set the start date for Salazar's revenge in the United States on the original "Star Wars" date on Memorial Day weekend, ie May 26, 2017. In Germany, the film was released on May 25 shown.

occupation

In August 2012, before the pre-production for the film began and a year before the release of the previous film, Johnny Depp signed his engagement for a fifth Pirates-of-the-Caribbean film for a fee of around 68 million US dollars . As with the previous film, he was also hired to plan the film. In December 2014 it was confirmed that Geoffrey Rush would again portray the villain Hector Barbossa. After Orlando Bloom decided not to return as Will Turner in the fourth part of the series, Disney officially confirmed on August 15, 2015 that he was available again for the fifth part for the role. Bloom suggested that Salazar's Revenge puts an emphasis on Turner and his relationship with his son.

On January 24, 2015, Kaya Scodelario , who embodies the character Carina, was also cast in a female leadership role. As an antagonist, Javier Bardem was cast in the role of Captain Salazar in October 2014

Filming

The film was shot exclusively in Australia. Pre-production is supposed to have started there at the end of September 2014, so that shooting could start on February 17, 2015. The ship scenes were doing before Green Screen in Helensvale , Queensland , rotated. In Maudsland , Queensland, a village was built especially for the shoot.

On March 10, 2015, Depp injured his hand and was flown to the United States for treatment. When all the scenes that could be shot without Depp were filmed, around 200 crew members had to wait two weeks for Depp to return so that work could continue. On April 21, the lead actor finally returned to filming.

Johnny Depp on the set in Queensland (June 2015)

From March 30 to June 15, 2015, waterworking scenes were filmed in Doug Jennings Park in Southport . Due to rough seas, however, filming continued in Raby Bay in Redland City . In Lenox Head in New South Wales it is said to have been shot in the meantime. Scenes with a sperm whale were filmed in Hastings Point , New South Wales, from June 21 to 23 . Only a few actors left to travel to the Whitsunday Islands in July , where the final scenes were to be shot.

During the filming, animal rights activists protested the film project when two capuchin monkeys from California were flown to Australia to work. The activists said the unnatural environment could be harmful to the monkeys' health.

synchronization

The German synchronization took over the FFS Film & TV sync in Berlin , after a dialogue book and the dialogue director of Axel Malzacher . All actors from previous films were cast with the same speakers. The cast from Marcus Off to David Nathan took place before the fourth film .

reception

Reviews

Of 242 reviews of Rotten Tomatoes , only 30 percent were positive. There it says unanimously: "Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge proves that neither a change of directors nor an undead Javier Bardem are enough to drain the dark nonsense of the sinking franchise."

Susan Vahabzadeh wrote in the Süddeutsche Zeitung : “Anyone who loves Jack Sparrow will follow him on his fifth journey - this time he and the son of Elizabeth and Will Turner are chasing a trident and meet a half-decayed Javier Bardem, who is happy to return want among the living. The plot is sorted a little more stringently by the directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg than in the last films in the pirate series, but the most important thing is that Johnny Depp staggers through the Caribbean as Sparrow. And you don't have to cry long after dying characters - in Jack Sparrow's pirate universe, death is not necessarily final anyway. "

ZSSnake from Moviejones wrote: “Pirates is now in its fifth round and it remained to be feared that the film could cause symptoms of fatigue. But the all-clear can be given here, because Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), the legendary, drunk pirate with the outrageous lucky streak can also provide fun in his fifth adventure. Provided, of course, that you haven't seen enough of the character anyway, because then the new film will almost certainly not convince you otherwise. Jack stays Jack and that's a good thing or not. So Pirates 5 becomes the best film in the series since the original, which is allowed to sail away in the hold with earned 8/10 points or 4/5 pirate hats. "

The film-dienst judged: “The fifth part of the“ Pirates of the Caribbean ”franchise offers the familiar sprawling spectacle cinema, linked to a treasure hunt that is strongly reminiscent of the first film in the series (“ Pirates of the Caribbean ”, 2003) . That makes the adventure film not exactly original, but at least it is more dramaturgically focused than previous sequels. "

Gross profit

The film had production costs of 230 million US dollars, with the film grossing around 795 million US dollars worldwide.

The film occupies 91st place in the list of the most successful films without inflation adjustment (as of August 8, 2020).
