The Autovía A-62 is a highway in Spain. It connects the Portuguese Border with Salamanca, Valladolid and Burgos. It is part of the European route E-80. Starting in the city of Burgos, it ends in the Portuguese border in the town of Fuentes de Oñoro(Salamanca). Before the nomenclature change of autovías and autopistas in 2003, its name was N-620.

History

The first section to become a motorway was Valladolid-Palencia, in the middle 1980s. But it was not designed as a current autovía because it was one of the first across Spain and the safety standarts (as different-level crossings) were not already set. Same-level crossings were too dangerous as the road began to be more used. Finally, it was improved and the other sections were built in the 1990s. It was completely finished (except the international bridge in Fuentes de Oñoro on December 2008.

Importance

This road is one of the most used in Castile-León, mostly by trucks travelling between France and Portugal, because is the natural way out of this ultimate country to the further Europe. Traffic increase due the expansion of the metropolitan area of Valladolid and the aperture of an IKEA center only accessible by this road have lead the authorities to study a third-lane in the Tordesillas-Palencia section.
