Hannah Montana is an American children's television series which debuted on Friday, March 24, 2006. Miley Cyrus stars as Miley Stewart/Hannah Montana, who lives a double life as a normal 14-year-old girl at school during the day and a famous pop star (Hannah Montana) at night, hiding her secret from the public. The show is co-created by Michael Poryes, who also co-created another Disney Channel Original Series That's So Raven and is produced by It's a Laugh Productions, Inc., in association with Disney Channel.

The series premiere scored record ratings for Disney Channel: 5.4 million viewers, a response "beyond our wildest expectations," according to the president of Disney Channel Entertainment.[1]

Plot

Template:Spoiler The series is set in modern day Malibu, California. The show centers on Miley Stewart's (Miley Cyrus) life as a student at an average middle school. Nobody except her dad, brother, and two best friends knows that she is the famous pop superstar, Hannah Montana. She lives in a house by the beach with her father Robby (Billy Ray Cyrus) and 16-year-old brother Jackson (Jason Earles). The Stewarts are Nashville, Tennessee transplants. Jackson and Miley's mother died four years ago in the show, leaving singer-songwriter Robby a widower and the sole caretaker of their children, giving up his previous career as a famous country singer. He is also the disguised manager of Hannah Montana. Miley's two best friends Lilly Truscott (Emily Osment) and Oliver Oken (Mitchel Musso) also live nearby and attend school with her. Each episode deals with adolescent life issues, personal conflicts, or problems that are easily solved, with lessons learned by the show's end. Seasonal events in the series correlate with the actual seasonal events of the original airdate. Miley likes Jake Ryan, a movie star, who goes to her school. Recently, the episodes began forming on a saga of Miley trying to get Jake to go out with her. At the most recent episode, he kisses her passionatley, before explaining he has to shoot a movie in Romania for 4 months. Miley then goes on to push him off of the ledge by the beach. Production

The series' working title was The Idol Life, but was later changed to Hannah Montana.[verification needed] Other names considered for the title were The Secret Life of Zoe Stewart, and The Popstar Life!. Former American Juniors finalist Jordan McCoy, pop and R&B singer JoJo (who rejected the role), and actress Alyson Stoner were considered for the role of Zoe Stewart. Miley Cyrus originally auditioned for the role of the "best friend"[2] Lilly Romero, later changed to Lilly Truscott, but they thought she would be better for the main character, so she tried out for Zoe Stewart/Hannah Montana, changed to Miley Stewart when she got the part.

Music

"Just Like You" and "The Other Side of Me" were originally tested for the opening theme song,[verification needed] but it was changed to "Best of Both Worlds," performed by Miley Cyrus (as Hannah Montana). The song's lyrics describe the basic premise of the television series. The style of music in the series is country[3] and pop rock.

The television soundtrack was released on October 24, 2006 by Walt Disney Records and debuted at #1 on Billboard 200. The soundtrack has since been certified Platinum.[1] It includes many of the songs featured in the series. Breaking a record on the Hot 100, the album debuted six singles on the chart -- the most by an artist in one week.
