Vincent Chong Ying-Cern (commercial name Vince Chong) is the first born reality TV star from Malaysia called Akademi Fantasia. The show has since been the highest rating TV program 4 years back and had produced new talents like himself, Zahid, Mawi and Faizal. Vince is popular as a RNB artiste and self-penned most of the songs in his albums. Vince popularity increased internationally after he teamed up with Nikki Gil and Alicia Pan to record a soundtrack from High School Musical, Breaking Free Asian Version
Background
Born in 1979 to a mixed parentage, Chong Chen Kian (Chinese) and Susan Ann (Caucasian British from England) Chong is an energetic, jovial, caring and devoted son. A loving brother to his 4 younger siblings Pamela, Daniel, Ian and Sean and to his older sister Vanessa, Vince is thankful to have a family who supports him continuously in becoming a recording artiste and actor in Malaysia.
He holds a Diploma in Marketing from Stamford College Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. He held back his final year Degree in order to fulfill his dream to become a professional singer. Vince also holds a certificate in basic music arranging from International College of Music (ICOM) Kuala Lumpur.

History
Before he became a professional singer, Chong was a Degree student and had worked as a fraud analyst and marketing assistant. He started entertaining people through singing since he was a kid and was involved in several church plays, singing competitions and modelling advertisments with his beloved sister Vanessa. He performed his opera solo at the age of 14 in front of more than 2000 audience.
He had experience in several church plays and theater as a director and script writer. Back in college Chong formed a music band called IBNOT. Since then he had written and composed a lot of songs as part of his hobby. The band played several genres of music like Rock, RNB, Jazz, Alternative etc. Chong also had experience as a back up vocal for professional artistes... his big achievement was doing back up vocal for singer Ferhad[1] in Anugerah Industri Muzik Awards in 2001.
Reality Show
Chong's first serious singing competition was in Astro Talent Quest (ATQ) 2002. Not fluent in Mandarin (as he speaks Cantonese, English and Malay), Vince never gave up in learning and memorising the Mandarin songs as the competition required all the contestants to perform 5 songs each. Through his determination and motivation Vince won the 2nd place in ATQ.
In the year 2003 after returning from his holiday in Gold Coast, Australia, Vanessa and Rueben (Burn AF1) encourage him to join Akademi Fantasia's 1st season. Chong and Rueben went to the AF audition in KL and successfully became the final 12 AF students. For 9 weeks he and his AF friends have to live separately from their family and friends just to strive their singing talents. Even Vince himself had a hard time in the earlier weeks communicating in Malay.
In the show Chong's were seen closer to Liza, one of AF contestant. Both were frequently paired for any gimic in the show. But he and Liza had confess that they were only friends not more than that. He also frammed as caring and jovial contestants by his concern to others that were fall sick during the program. Chong and Khai are called "The kamcengs" (best buddy) during the whole show by AF teacher Pn. Siti Hajar due to they vote percentage are always besides, sitting besides, frequently room mates and were found suffered diarrhea together on the show. His notable characteristic in AF are he's easily cry and sad when seven of his friends are withdrawed after the AF concert.
Week after week Chong was finally crowned the winner for Akademi Fantasia's 1st season along with Khai as 1st runner up and Azizi as 2nd runner up. He received an offer to do a duet with Malaysian singer Nora a song titled Dilema'03 for her greatest hits album.
Reality Life
After Akademi fantasia, Chong and his 11 friends made a roadshow of Akademi Fantasia around Malaysia and Brunei. The roadshow were highly anticipated by Akademi Fantasia fans and Vince were highly admired by the fans along with Khai, Nana, Sahri and etc. The group were interviewed by Azwan Ali in his popular talk show Cit Cat Azwan. The fans had voted them as the best new comer artist interviewed in Cit Cat Azwan Award in 2003.
Chong's made his final appearance in group when they were performed road tour in Brunei. He had decided to leave Maestro Talent and become independent singer. By leaving AF fame he'd joined EMI Malaysia to start his singing career. It's very hard journey for Chong as independent singer when his best friend cum as competitor Khai were shined more due his memorable killer song "Dambaan Pilu". But he is always positive as his first album self titled Vince were also highly anticipated with his single Mengapa Harus Cinta? entered to several music chart. Chong were selected as one of final contestants to competed in highly prestige competition Anugerah Juara Lagu. His sweetest memory were competed in Shanghai Asian Music Festival 2004 and crowned 3rd place.
In the year 2004 and 2005 Chong's were shined after received several awards due to his achievement and he recevied an offer to be a lead actor for Yusoff Haslam's new film Sembilu 2005. His first appearance in silverscreen had received positive reaction from his fans but some thinks that his natural acting were burden over heavy script of the film.
In 2005 he's choosen to sing one of sountrack in Puteri Gunung Ledang (film) titled Keranamu Kekasih. In 2006 he released his second album Janji Vince and receive mix of reactions from his fans and experts. The album were better than his first album and some controversial cross over the fans when Vince pronouced the Arab word Taala (the one) in his song Berkobar-bokar. But the composer of the song Yassin clarify that the word had a lot of meaning and in the album booklet Taala is noted as Coming
Current project
His current project is representing Malaysia to sing the Asian Version of the Billboard top chart Breaking Free (from Disney's High School Musical film). Chong is teamed up with his 2 duet partners Alicia Pan and Nikki Gil (represent Singapore and Philippines respectively).
He's had been invited frequently to perform in private function, Gospel shows and his appearance were highly demand for Christmas performance in television.
In 2007, Chong will sit down to write and composed more new song for his coming repacked album and his main focused will be released his album in Indonesia. He had written two songs for Indonesian new singer Jimmy and one song for his long time friend Rueben.
