Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is a 2007 film adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical of the same name. The film stars Johnny Depp in the title role, in his sixth collaboration with director Tim Burton. The film is scheduled for a nation-wide U.S. release on December 21,2007.[1]

Plot

Sweeney Todd (Johnny Depp) returns to London after having escaped a wrongful imprisonment, only to find that his wife and child have suffered at the hands of Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman), the very man who imprisoned him. With the help of his former landlady, Nellie Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter), Sweeney Todd launches a plan for vengeance that initially targets the individuals responsible for his misfortunes, but ultimately draws all society in his sights.

Production

In August 2006, DreamWorks announced that Tim Burton had taken over direction for the film, and Johnny Depp was cast as Todd.[3]

Filming began on February 5, 2007 at Pinewood Studios,[4] but was interrupted due to Depp's daughter falling ill;[5] filming resumed in late March.[6]

Christopher Lee, Anthony Head, Peter Bowles and 5 other actors were originally cast as ghost narrators set to sing "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd". However, due to the ailing of Johnny Depp's daughter, the schedule became tight and the characters were dropped from the film.[7]

Tim Burton had reported this film to be a R rated musical. [8] This was affirmed on the film's official Web site. [9]
