Justin Masterson (born March 22, 1985) is a relief pitcher for the Portland Sea Dogs. Masterson was drafted in the 2nd round in 2006 by the Boston Red Sox. He attended high school at his hometown of Beavercreek, Ohio. He also attended Bethel College and San Diego State University . He is 6-6 foot tall and weighs 250 pounds. He throws and bats right-handed.

Career

Masterson is a talented pitcher who dominated the Cape Cod Baseball League. Masterson has been switched from starting pitcher to relief pitcher, also called a set-up man, throughout his career. He was signed to the minors by Dan Madsen. Masterson is an improving pitcher who has a strong character.

Pitching

Masterson pitches at a three-quarter delivery with a sliding-type motion. His pitching arsenal includes a fastball, sinker, slider, and a change-up. His best pitch is his phenomenal plus-sinker with an excellent heavy-drop. He can vary his excellent sinker at speeds of 84-94mph, catching many batters off balance. His slider is at the low 80's with an improving change-up ranging from 77-81mph. He is smart at getting batters to hit groundballs basically on command, inducing many double plays. Masterson pitches with superb confidence with excellent command of the strike zone.
