The Sure Thing is a 1985 romantic comedy directed by Rob Reiner and written by Stephen L. Bloom and Jonathan Roberts. It features John Cusack, Daphne Zuniga, Anthony Edwards, Tim Robbins, Boyd Gaines, and Nicollette Sheridan.

Plot summary

The plot centers on the characters of Walter 'Gib' Gibson (John Cusack) a girl-obsessed college student in New England, and Allison Bradbury (Daphne Zuniga), a beautiful but uptight student in Gib's English class. Both of them travel to California over Christmas break, Allison to see her boyfriend, and Gib to meet the "sure thing", a girl who will have sex with him with no strings attached.

Notes

This film was Rob Reiner's second directorial effort (after Spinal Tap) and was filmed at the University of the Pacific (UOP) in Stockton, CA and the surrounding area using many college students as extras. UOP simulated an Ivy League school feel according to producers and was cheaper than filming back east. However, one brief shot of Gib running across a snow-covered campus was shot at Cornell University. Some interesting notes from the filming of the moving include the keg being carried in the Friday night party scene is empty. The fake snow killed the grass at UOP after filming was complete. The entrance to the pool was actually the Engineering Department building at UOP. The classroom was actually a UOP classroom not a set in Hollywood. The hotel room was actually a set built at UOP not in Hollywood.

The Sure Thing was released to DVD on August 5, 2003.

Quotes

  • (Both characters are shelterless, standing in pouring rain, looking for makeshift tools to break into a shed, and apparently broke)
Allison: I have a credit card.
Gib: You have a credit card.
Allison: Oh, but my father specifically told me I can only use it in case of an emergency.
Gib: Well, maybe one will come up!
  • (Gib is fantasizing)
Sure Thing: Come on, Giblet. One more time. One more time.
Gib: I can't. Tomorrow, I promise.
Sure Thing: It was so good. It was so masterful. Relentless, but with a delicate touch. Confident, creative. I was overwhelmed. You're a true artist.
Gib: Just let me sleep a while, regain my strength. Five minutes. A grace period, if you will.
