WCW Nitro is a video game based on the professional wrestling TV show WCW Monday Nitro. Released by THQ for the PlayStation game console in March 1997, the game featured a large roster of playable WCW wrestlers as well as full motion video clips of the TV show. The game was followed by WCW/nWo Thunder, which was based on Nitro's Thursday night counterpart. Ports for the PC and Nintendo 64 were released in 1999 with the updated roster featured in Thunder. The PC version also features network play via TCP/IP.

Features

WCW Nitro uses a wrestling system similar to WWF Attitude. In order to perform various moves you have to do different button combinations. Some of these are simple 2-3 button combos for basic suplexes, hiptosses and piledrivers. But once you start using the more powerful moves, such as finishing moves, the combos become longer and trickier.

This game is small when it comes to play modes. There is a limited amount of match types (Single, Tag, Tournament) and no modifiers for these matches, which means each one is just a standard match.

Also there are no Season modes or CAW modes that you see in todays wrestling games.

Nitro manages to make up for this with its huge roster. There are 16 playable characters when you first start but you can unlock more and more by completing the Tournament mode with certain wrestlers. The unlockable characters range from regular wrestlers like Rey Mysterio, Chris Jericho and Steven Regal to WCW commentators and some of the game developers.

WCW Nitro also features a great amount of arenas and rings. Monday Nitro is the default arena but players can choose others like Halloween Havoc, Great American Bash and Souled Out.
