WWE 2K , is a computer game series officially licensed by the wrestling organizer World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) , which is currently supported by the US publisher 2K Games (until 2013 THQ ). The games are currently released for the PlayStation 3 , Xbox 360 , PlayStation 4 and Xbox One . The game series is also known as SmackDown , Raw , SmackDown vs. Known to Raw and WWE . Since the license was sold to 2K Games, the game series has been called WWE 2K.
history
The series was originally called SmackDown , after the show SmackDown , and only appeared on PlayStation. The game Raw , named after the flagship show Raw , was released exclusively for the Xbox . The first release in the series was WWF SmackDown! in March 2000, which along with these subsequent titles remained exclusive to Sony's PlayStation consoles. Two years later, WWF Raw was released exclusively for Microsoft's Xbox consoles. In 2004 the two games were merged and converted into SmackDown vs. Renamed Raw . Within a few years, the series was offered for various seventh generation consoles and mobile devices and was published annually. From 2007 to 2009 the addition featuring ECW was added after the WWE was expanded to include another brand. The series was renamed WWE in 2011 after the fire split ended .
Following the dissolution of THQ in January 2013, it was reported that the publishing rights for the WWE video game series were acquired by Take-Two Interactive . Take-Two confirmed the acquisition in February, saying it will also retain the services of Yuke's and the THQ staff who worked on the WWE series. WWE 2K14 is the first game to be released under the name WWE 2K .
