Eduardo Gory Guerrero Llanes (born October 9, 1967 in El Paso , Texas , † November 13, 2005 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ), known by his wrestling name Eddie Guerrero , was an American wrestler of Mexican descent.

He belonged to the Mexican wrestling family "Guerrero" and carried on the tradition of his father Gory Guerrero . From the 1990s he worked for many larger wrestling promotions in the USA ( Extreme Championship Wrestling , World Championship Wrestling and World Wrestling Entertainment ). He also appeared for leagues like NJPW, WWA, AAA , RoH and EMLL. His nephew is Chavo Guerrero , who worked for WWE until June 2011. Eddie Guerrero's widow Vickie was active in promotion for years, while his daughter Shaul Marie competed in the WWE Development League Florida Championship Wrestling as Raquel Diaz . His most successful time was in the world's largest wrestling league, the WWE.

Eddie Guerrero was born into a wrestling family, his father Gory Guerrero was one of the first professional wrestlers in Mexico. The El Paso (Texas) resident family had a wrestling ring in their garden, on which Eddie was already receiving regular lessons from his father when he was three years old, which enabled him to dropkick a short time later . In the following years he wrestled frequently with his brothers, Hector, Armando (Mando) and Chavo Guerrero Sr. , as well as his nephew Chavo Guerrero Jr. , the son of Chavo Guerrero, Sr.

Private life

Throughout Eddie Guerrero's career, his private life remained largely hidden. Away from the much-noticed and media-ridden wrestling business, Guerrero was able to find peace with his family. On April 24, 1990, Guerrero married his childhood sweetheart Vickie . The couple had two daughters together. The eldest daughter, Shaul Marie , was born in 1990 and Sherilyn Amber followed in 1995. Eddie Guerrero's third daughter, Kaylie Marie , was born out of wedlock during Eddie and Vickie's separation in 2002. The mother of his third daughter was Tara Maloney.

With some wrestling colleagues Guerrero was also good friends in private life, for example Dean Malenko , Rey Mysterio , Chris Jericho and Chris Benoit were among the closest friends of Guerrero. Eddie spent much of his free time training for wrestling. He often trained with his friends for wrestling shows, in which they then appeared together.

Around 1995 the pressure in the wrestling business increased. Guerrero started using drugs. Shortly afterwards, on December 29, 1996, he had a serious car accident which he was only lucky enough to survive. As a result of the car accident, Guerrero had to take pain medication for several months and take a break from wrestling. In the next four years he got his drug problems under control. On November 9, 2001, Guerrero was jailed for drink-driving and released three days later by WWF President Vince McMahon . His wife Vickie threatened to divorce Eddie. After Guerrero's daughter, Kaylie Marie , was born, he went on alcohol withdrawal and was dry by the end of 2001.

On November 13, 2005, Eddie Guerrero was found dead by his nephew Chavo in his room at the Marriott City Center Hotel in Minneapolis , Minnesota . He died of acute heart failure . A few hours later, the following message appeared on the WWE website. “ WWE is deeply saddened by the news that Eddie Guerrero has passed away. In honor of Guerrero, he received the November 14 editions of RAW and Friday Night SmackDown! dedicated on November 18th. Wrestling career

Eddie Guerrero began his career as a wrestler in September 1987. He first appeared in Mexican wrestling leagues. The Lucha Libre presented there is often much more acrobatic and harder than American wrestling. Eddie performed mainly for the AAA in Mexico . In 1993 Guerrero teamed up with Art Barr (1966-1994). Extreme Championship Wrestling (1995)

Guerrero saw no future for himself in the AAA and accepted the offer from the US ECW . At the same time he also appeared in Japan as the "Black Tiger". Shortly after joining ECW , Guerrero won the ECW World Television Championship in April 1995 . Shortly after losing his title, he switched to World Championship Wrestling .

World Championship Wrestling (1995-2000)

After he switched to WCW, he was initially unsuccessful, as Guerrero was only rarely used and as a jobber . In 1996 he joined the Japanese league NJPW at short notice, where he a. a. won the "Best of the Super Junior" tournament. Afterwards he appeared again exclusively for WCW. There he won the WCW United States Championship in 1996 , and in 1997 he won the WCW Cruiserweight Championship twice. In the following months, however, there were differences of opinion with the WCW President Eric Bischoff , as a result of which Guerrero withdrew for two months. After this break he founded the "Latino World Order", which gradually almost all Mexican wrestlers of the WCW entered. After Guerrero's car accident, the LWO was disbanded. Due to problems with management, he moved to WWF in 2000 together with Chris Benoit , Dean Malenko and Perry Saturn .

World Wrestling Federation (2000-2001)

Guerrero and the other former WCW wrestlers made their debut in the WWF on January 31, 2000. From there they called themselves the Radicalz . With the WWE European Championship Guerrero won his first title in the WWF, which he was able to win several times. In May 2001, however, he had to go into withdrawal for drug addiction. Shortly before his return he was arrested for drunk driving and then released by the WWF .

Independent Leagues (2001-2002)

After finally overcoming his addiction, Guerrero appeared in various independent promotions, including World Wrestling All-Stars , IWA Mid-South and Ring of Honor . During his independent career, he won the IWA Mid-South Heavyweight Championship in Indianapolis on March 1, 2002 by defeating CM Punk and Rey Mysterio. The following day he lost the title again to CM Punk. At the end of March 2002 he was hired again by the WWF, which had since been renamed WWE .

Return to WWE (2002-2005)

On his first appearance on RAW, he attacked Rob van Dam and started a feud . He teamed up with Chris Benoit again. On April 21, 2002 he was able to win the Intercontinental Championship from Rob van Dam at the major event Backlash . A month later he lost this belt to Rob van Dam in a ladder match . A feud with The Rock ensued .

On August 1, 2002, Guerrero and Chris Benoit switched to SmackDown , WWE's second roster alongside RAW . While Benoit teamed up with Kurt Angle , Eddie allied himself with his nephew Chavo Guerrero. Together they formed the Los Guerreros tag team . The team won the WWE Tag Team Championships from Edge and Rey Mysterio at the PPV Survivor Series on November 17, 2002 . On February 4, 2003, they lost the title to Team Angle (consisting of Shelton Benjamin & Charlie Haas ). Due to a bicep torn from Chavo, Guerrero was allowed to compete with Tajiri and they won the title at the major Judgment Day event . After they lost their title to Team Angle on July 1, the team was separated.

In 2003 Eddie took part in a tournament for the WWE United States Championship . He won this after defeating Benoit in the tournament finals. After Chavo Guerrero's recovery, Team Los Guerreros was reunited and they won the WWE Tag Team Championship by beating Team Angle . At the October major No Mercy 2003 event, Guerrero lost his United States Championship to Big Show . Four days later, Los Guerreros also lost the Tag Team Championships to the Basham Brothers. Then the team was separated again and the Guerreros feuded against each other.

On February 15, 2004 at the major event No Way Out, Guerrero won the WWE Championship with a win over Brock Lesnar . He was able to hold the title for several months, including Guerrero defending him at Wrestlemania 20 against Kurt Angle . He also defended his title against Big Show and Rey Mysterio. In July 2004 he lost the title to John "Bradshaw" Layfield in a Texas Bullrope Match . Eddie now allied with Big Show to start a new feud against Kurt Angle.

On February 20, 2005, Guerrero was tag team champion again with Rey Mysterio. On April 21st they lost their title to the new tag team MNM ( Joey Mercury & John Morrison ). Subsequently, Guerrero feuded against Mysterio for a long time.

There followed a feud against Batista , before he feuded with him against Randy Orton , whose father cowboy Bob Orton and Mr. Kennedy feuded.

In the issue of Friday Night SmackDown! on November 11, 2005 Eddie Guerrero played against Mr. Kennedy, the last match in his career, which he won.
